Bosch's eBike Flow 1.36 update brings customizable Extended Boost and pedal lag reduction technology, optimizing the riding experience on Performance Line engines.

Bosch has officially released a free software update for its e-bike drivetrain, focusing on improving motor control and responsiveness. Through version 1.36 of the eBike Flow app, users can have more control over how the bike operates, especially in challenging terrain situations.

Customize Extended Boost: Intelligent propulsion control

The most notable highlight of this update is the ability to configure the Extended Boost feature. Previously, this feature was usually set by default by the manufacturer, but now drivers can fine-tune the level of overrun assistance through different stages directly on the mobile app.

Bosch is rolling out a new software update for some of its electric bicycle powertrain systems.

The Extended Boost mechanism allows the bike to continue moving for up to 2 meters after the rider stops pedaling for the last time. This is extremely useful when overcoming obstacles such as tree roots on trails or climbing curbs in urban environments without having to pedal continuously. However, Bosch also advises users to get used to this setting, as the sustained thrust can be surprising for new users.

Performance Line features pedal lag reduction technology.

In addition to Extended Boost, Bosch also introduced a "drivetrain preloading" function specifically for the Performance Line CX-R (BDU386Y) and Performance Line CX (BDU384Y) motors. This feature works most effectively in Race, eMTB, and eMTB+ modes.

Technically, drivetrain preloading minimizes pedal dead travel. As a result, engine response time is significantly shortened, allowing for smoother and more instantaneous power regulation. This is a crucial improvement for professional riders who frequently navigate challenging terrain requiring absolute precision with every pedal stroke.

List of supported engine types

Update 1.36 applies to a range of Bosch mid-range drive systems, including:

Currently, this update is being prioritized for the German market and other regions in Europe. Users can check and install it via the eBike Flow app to optimize their bike's performance. Bosch's continuous software updates demonstrate a trend towards "software-ization" of hardware, making e-bike devices more flexible and durable over time.
