Dien grapefruit trees full of fruit brought from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City are sold for up to 25 million VND per tree and are very attractive to buyers.

This year's Tet, Mr. Vo Van Hai (49 years old, owner of a bonsai garden) tried to import about 120 Dien grapefruit trees to sell on Pham Van Dong street. "In the South, green-skinned grapefruit is often sold, so I tried importing Northern grapefruit to sell," Mr. Hai explained. |
Grapefruit trees full of golden fruit are displayed by the garden owner right on the sidewalk to attract tourists. |
To have a beautiful Dien grapefruit tree, it is necessary to import the goods from the beginning of December. In the South, this variety cannot be grown yet. According to Mr. Hai, if the transportation process is not done properly, the tree can easily die or lose its fruit. |
The larger, yellower and more clustered the grapefruit trees are, the higher the price. In addition, the size and beauty of the roots are also a factor that determines the price. Normally, each tree has 50-90 grapefruits. |
Dien grapefruit can be grafted with many fruits with different types of segments. Normal grapefruit trees only produce 30-50 fruits, while grafted trees can produce up to hundreds of fruits. |
The Dien grapefruit pots have an average age of 10-15 years. The older the tree, the more expensive it is, with prices ranging from 10-25 million VND per tree. |
These two trees are about 3m tall, 15 years old and are for sale at 25 million VND each. According to Mr. Hai, the perennial trees were grafted with small fruits half a year ago and then uprooted and transported to Ho Chi Minh City. |
Every day, many customers come to buy Dien grapefruit trees. Trees with many fruits and large trunks are often the first choice of customers. |
After a while of looking, Mr. Nguyen Danh Hien (Thu Duc district) only "dared" to buy a young grapefruit tree for a few million. "I really wanted to see the big trees full of fruit but I didn't have enough money. I bought the young tree to display for a few days during Tet and then planted it to try, in case the tree doesn't grow, it wouldn't be a pity," said Mr. Hien. |
"There are only a few 25 million VND trees left in the garden, bought by previous customers. Some customers bought them and left them in the garden for them to take care of until near Tet before bringing them home," Mr. Hai said. |
