On the morning of September 17, Mr. Huynh Phi Cong (33 years old, residing in group 20, My Hung 2 hamlet, My Hoa commune, Binh Minh town, Vinh Long) pulled the net that had been released earlier on the Hau river and caught a yellow croaker weighing 5.5 kg and nearly 1 meter long.

Mr. Cong was happy to catch a "giant" golden croaker.

Mr. Cong said the location of the net was 3 km downstream from Can Tho bridge. “When I pulled the net to bring the fish ashore, I didn’t know it was a yellow croaker, I only knew it was a big fish because the net was very heavy. My younger brother and I struggled for nearly 10 minutes to pull the fish onto the boat,” Mr. Cong said.

After news broke that Mr. Cong had caught a "huge" golden croaker, a restaurant owner in Can Tho came to negotiate and offered 450 million VND, but Mr. Cong refused to sell.

"This morning, a tycoon in Saigon contacted me, came down to see and expressed his desire to buy this golden croaker," said a relative of Mr. Cong.

Many fishermen in My Hoa commune said that in the locality, there are many families who live by fishing on the river and also know a lot about the fish, but it is the white fish. "There are fish that weigh tens of kilograms. However, this is the first time I have seen such a big yellow fish," said Mr. Huynh Ngoc Phuong (56 years old), a local resident.

Previously, in mid-August 2016, Nguyen Thi Tuyet Hanh and her husband (residing in Tam Hiep commune, Binh Dai district, Ben Tre province) also caught a yellow croaker, weighing 3.8 kg, nearly 1 meter long, and traders came to buy it for hundreds of millions of dong.

The golden croaker has the scientific name Otolithoides and is listed as one of the most expensive fish. This fish is mainly distributed in India, Vietnam, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and China.
