Experts predict that terrorist attacks are likely to increase in 2018, as the dismantling of IS's physical strongholds in Iraq and Syria will encourage them to launch attacks elsewhere.

Lewis-Sage Passant, a former British Army intelligence officer, stated: “ISIS wants to demonstrate that they are still in the fight, and that their followers will remain fanatical about this terrorist group. This will likely lead to an increase in the number of attacks globally as the group shifts its focus from the Middle East conflict to international terrorism.”

Adam Deen, executive director of the Quilliam Institute for Counterterrorism Studies, also offered a similar assessment. Deen stated, "We will certainly see more attacks in the West." The expert believes that ISIS is currently focused on revenge and warns against complacency following the death of terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden.

Meanwhile, Anthony Richards, Associate Professor of Terrorism Studies at the University of East London (UK), commented: “The threats in the West will persist in the form of individuals still incited by ISIS's ideological spread. In the long term, the defeat of ISIS and the suppression of its ideology will reduce the threat in the UK and Europe, but… in the short term we will still see more terrorist attacks.”

Some experts predict that attacks will be carried out more frequently, accompanied by the use of weapons with reduced lethality, including an increase in knife attacks and vehicle-borne assaults.

One expert explained that the reason is that "IS has lost its central coordination and revenue-generating capabilities, making it difficult for them to afford costly attacks like the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks."
