Coach Alfred Riedl was born in 1949. He led the Vietnam national team three times in the periods of 1998 - 2001, 2003 and 2005 - 2007. The first tournament he led the Vietnamese players was the Tiger Cup 1998, winning the Silver medal. Including a 3-0 victory over Thailand with the golden generation of Viet Hoang, Sy Hung, Huynh Duc, Hong Son, Duc Thang.
