Dismissal of the Director of the Environmental Protection Activities Control Department.
Mr. Luong Duy Hanh, former Director of the Environmental Protection Activities Control Department (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment), has been demoted to specialist.
Sources from the Ministry of Natural Resources indicate that today, Mr. Luong Duy Hanh (former Director of the Environmental Protection Activities Control Department) has taken on a new role as a specialist in the Legal Department of the Ministry. This is the last case among individuals concluded by the Central Inspection Committee to have committed violations in the environmental incident in four central provinces caused by Formosa.
According to the Central Disciplinary Committee, Mr. Hanh was irresponsible in his role as head of the inspection team for the Formosa project; he failed to advise on and supervise the implementation of environmental protection measures during the construction and trial operation phases. The Central Disciplinary Committee decided to remove Mr. Hanh from all his positions within the Party.
Previously, three individuals from the Ministry of Natural Resources were disciplined: former Minister Nguyen Minh Quang, Deputy Minister Bui Cach Tuyen, and Nguyen Thai Lai. As for Mr. Mai Thanh Dung, the Ministry of Natural Resources transferred him from Deputy Director General of Environment to Deputy Director of the Institute for Resource and Environment Policy and Strategy.
Regarding the above incident, Mr. Vo Kim Cu, Secretary of the Party Committee, Chairman of the Vietnam Cooperative Alliance, former Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, former Secretary of the Party Committee of the Provincial People's Committee, and former Chairman of the People's Committee of Ha Tinh province, bears primary responsibility for the violations and shortcomings of the Party Committee of the Provincial People's Committee during the period 2008-2016 and the Management Board of the Ha Tinh Provincial Economic Zone from 2008 to 2010.
In early April 2016, a mass fish kill occurred, originating from several fish cages near the Vung Ang industrial zone (Ha Tinh province), and subsequently spreading to Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien Hue provinces. More than two months later, Formosa Ha Tinh admitted that its wastewater discharge was the direct cause of the marine environmental disaster and paid $500 million in compensation. This money has been and is being transferred to the people affected by the incident. |
