Leaders in Quang Binh province expressed outrage over reports that village officials had arbitrarily "reclaimed" flood relief funds intended for residents.

On the afternoon of October 25th, responding to the incident of village officials arbitrarily "collecting" flood relief money from residents, Mr. Nguyen Huu Hoai, Chairman of the Quang Binh Provincial People's Committee, said that the province had just received complaints from the people through the press and was urgently investigating the matter.

"If it is true that such incidents of collecting back money from charitable relief organizations intended for the people occurred, then these officials should be dismissed immediately without further ado," Mr. Hoai emphasized.

Ms. Le Thi Nuoi had her money taken back by the village.

Meanwhile, Mr. Pham Quang Long, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ba Don town, said that he had been informed of the incident and had issued an urgent directive to the leaders of Quang Trung commune, demanding that they rectify the situation and return all the recovered relief funds.

"This action by the village officials in Trung Thon was spontaneous. The village officials noticed that these households had received donations multiple times. This recovery is to regulate the situation within the village," Mr. Long said.

Furthermore, Mr. Long added that after the incident occurred, he directly called the leaders of the communes, wards, and towns in the area to rectify the situation, remind them, and instruct the villages to absolutely refrain from collecting back relief money given to people by charitable organizations from now on.

According to the leaders of Ba Don town, after the historic flood in mid-October, many charitable groups from all over the country came to Quang Binh province in general and Ba Don town in particular to provide material and spiritual support to help people overcome difficulties and quickly stabilize their lives.

Residents of Trung Thon village are upset that the village is taking back flood relief money.

"Regarding the actions of the officials in Trung Thon village, the Ba Don Town People's Committee has requested that they immediately return the money to the people. After that, these officials must submit a detailed report, and the Town People's Committee will decide on a course of action," Mr. Long continued.

Previously, residents of Trung Thon village (Quang Trung commune, Ba Don town) reported that many charitable organizations from across the country came to their homes to give them money and gifts as support after the historic floods.

On October 22nd, a charity group from Ho Chi Minh City distributed approximately 40 gift packages to many households in extremely difficult circumstances in the village. Each package was worth 500,000 VND, along with additional support gifts.

However, as soon as the relief team left, the leader of Trung Thon village arbitrarily assigned several officials to go to people's homes to collect back the 400,000 to 500,000 dong that the people were entitled to, claiming it was to be "divided equally" among all residents.
