Police chief dismissed for having an affair in a motel.
The head of the police in Thuong Xuan town (Thanh Hoa province) has been recommended for a Party disciplinary warning and dismissal from his position following a scandal in which he was caught dating in a motel.
On August 22, the People's Committee of Thuong Xuan town (Thuong Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province) announced that during a meeting to gather opinions on disciplining Mr. Trinh Quang Hanh (Head of the town's police force) for an illicit romantic relationship, attendees unanimously agreed to recommend a Party warning and dismissal from his position.
In the coming period, once the town's People's Committee has completed its review, the Thường Xuân District People's Committee's Disciplinary Council will issue the final decision.
Despite being married, Mr. Hanh's affair with a woman living nearby was discovered on the evening of July 18th when the woman's ex-husband kicked down the door and stormed in, confronting them in a jealous rage.
He confiscated both men's clothing, demanded that they "leave the scene as is," and called the police to resolve the matter. During the altercation, Mr. Hanh ran out of the room, leaving behind his personal belongings and police equipment.
In his report to his superiors, Mr. Hanh claimed that this was a "voluntary" romantic relationship. "We went into a room to talk and personal needs arose…," Mr. Hanh explained, admitting that his actions were wrong and violated the ethics of a Party member and official.
Regarding the woman's ex-husband's accusation that Mr. Hanh's extramarital affair led to the breakdown of his marriage, authorities stated that there was no basis to confirm this and the matter would continue to be investigated.
Mr. Hanh is currently suspended from his duties. Besides holding the position of Chief of Police of Thuong Xuan town, he is also a member of the Party Committee Executive Board and a representative of the People's Council of Thuong Xuan town for the 2016-2021 term. He is also under investigation by authorities on suspicion of using a fake high school diploma to advance in his career.
According to local authorities, the woman and her husband divorced in June but continued to live together. The husband had recently returned from working abroad. Mr. Hanh, on the other hand, has a wife and three children.
