How to identify a faulty airbag sensor

According to experts, airbags are an extremely important part of a car; when the airbag sensor system malfunctions, the warning light will continuously illuminate to alert the user.

Here are some reasons why airbag sensors might malfunction.

The airbag's backup battery was depleted because the car's battery had already run out; this can be resolved by fully recharging the battery.

One of the sensor components malfunctions or collides with another, causing the warning light to stay on continuously. The airbag system comprises many components and sensors located in various positions, all controlled by the ECU.

The airbag spring wears out naturally due to continuous operation over a long period, causing poor connection and malfunction.

The airbag module may short circuit or corrode due to exposure to moisture. This will generate a diagnostic fault code and the warning light will illuminate.

During vehicle use, if occupants do not wear seat belts or use them incorrectly, the airbag sensor warning light may continuously illuminate. If seat belts are worn but the warning light still comes on, it may indicate that the buckle is not securely fastened.

When a car displays an airbag sensor error, the user must investigate the cause to address the root of the problem. Airbags are a passive safety system designed to minimize injuries and impacts during vehicle use. Except in cases where the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) is giving an inaccurate warning, all other issues require inspection and repair as they can affect the safety of the driver and passengers.

Is it safe to drive when the airbag sensor is malfunctioning?

A faulty airbag sensor means the sensor light on the dashboard will flash or illuminate. Drivers should not continue driving with a faulty sensor. In the event of an accident, the airbags will not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.

How to handle an airbag sensor error on your car.

When encountering the airbag sensor fault warning light, vehicle owners need to take the following steps:

Step 1:Check all components that might be causing the airbag sensor to malfunction.

Turn the car off and on again to see if the airbag warning light turns off automatically. Repeat this 3 to 4 times.

Restart the vehicle and drive a short distance if the airbag light is flashing continuously. The purpose of this is to allow the vehicle to restart a power cycle. Before starting, check the wiring under the seat for loose connections or faulty plugs.

Check the seat belt system for looseness, failure to fasten, or improper fastening in the seating position.

Check if the passenger seat airbag switch is turned off. This only happens in some vehicles that have an airbag on/off button located on the passenger seat.

Check the sensor on the passenger seat. If the weight placed on the seat is too great (usually objects), the sensor system will mistakenly think a person is sitting there and illuminate the light. To resolve this, either remove the object from the passenger seat and fasten the seatbelt. If the warning light still comes on after doing this, the sensor is faulty and needs replacing.

Inspect the watch spring. If it is broken or damaged, replace it.

Step 2:After inspection, if the sensor system is faulty and can be fixed at home, use an SRS reset scanner to reset the airbag light. It's important to choose a scanner with a fault code display feature to help troubleshoot the problem at its root.

Step 3:If, after trying everything, the sensor light still shows an error, take it to an auto repair center or garage for inspection and the quickest and most optimal solution. Avoid delaying the repair or failing to resolve the issue completely, as this can cause inconvenience and compromise safety during use.
