Turn signals, also known as signal lights, help drivers signal before turning and also alert other vehicles to potential malfunctions so they can avoid a collision.

Turn signals are an important lighting system on a car, but they don't always function properly. Sometimes they malfunction unexpectedly, such as not lighting up or flashing continuously. Early detection of a faulty light will help drivers get it repaired in time.

Signs of a malfunctioning turn signal

To check if the turn signals are malfunctioning, first turn the ignition key to the ON position but do not start the engine. Then, inspect each part of the vehicle:

- Determine whether the front or rear turn signals are malfunctioning.

- Check the fuses in the main fuse box using a circuit tester.

- Check the electromagnetic relay: After removing this part, the driver uses a piece of wire to connect the two terminals at the relay's mounting location. If the turn signals illuminate in both the left and right directions but do not flash, it means the relay is faulty and needs to be replaced.

- Check the turn signal switch to see if it's faulty, as this is the most frequently malfunctioning part.

- If, after replacing the faulty bulbs, the lights are still flickering too quickly or dimly, the bulb socket needs to be checked.

How to replace turn signal lights

First, turn off the lights and ignition, and wait for the bulbs and engine compartment to cool down before removing them.

Next, select the correct light bulb according to the specifications table.

Next, open the hood of the car if the front turn signal is broken, or open the trunk if the rear turn signal is broken. Reach under the turn signal bulb and unscrew it counterclockwise to remove the broken bulb. Then, install a new bulb by screwing it in clockwise.

Replacing turn signals is fairly simple; however, if you're hesitant to do the research and want to be sure, it's best to take it to a garage for a professional mechanic to inspect and repair.
