How to calculate the total cost of getting a car on the road in Vietnam.
The on-the-road price of a new car of the same type varies across different provinces and cities in Vietnam.
The constantly changing tax and fee policies when buying a new car leave many people unsure of what additional costs they will have to pay. These additional expenses include various taxes and fees, the heaviest of which is the registration fee of 10-12%, followed by license plate registration fees ranging from 1 million to 20 million VND, road maintenance fees, and finally vehicle inspection fees and civil liability insurance.
In addition, there are optional fees such as comprehensive insurance (depending on the package) or vehicle registration services.
The actual cost after vehicle registration is usually about 12-20% higher (depending on the city) than the initial purchase price.
For example, the registration fee for a new 2016 Kia Morning Si AT in Hanoi is calculated as follows:
Kia Morning Si AT 2016 | Cost (VND) |
Car prices | 416,000,000 |
Registration fee (12%) | 49,920,000 |
Vehicle inspection fee | 340,000 |
Road usage fee (per year) | 1,560,000 |
Civil liability insurance | 437,000 |
Vehicle registration fee | 20,000,000 |
Total | 488,257,000 |
If this same vehicle were registered in Lang Son city, the costs would be significantly reduced in terms of registration tax and license plate fees, specifically:
| Kia Morning Si AT 2016 | Cost (VND) |
Car prices | 416,000,000 |
Registration fee (10%) | 41,600,000 |
Vehicle inspection fee | 340,000 |
Road usage fee (per year) | 1,560,000 |
Civil liability insurance | 437,000 |
Vehicle registration fee | 1,000,000 |
Total | 460,937,000 |
Therefore, for the same car with the same price, apart from the one-year road tax applied to vehicles with fewer than 9 seats (which is the same for all vehicles), all other taxes and fees vary from province to province in order to obtain legal registration.
The amount of fees and charges beyond the car price will increase or decrease proportionally with the car price. Of these, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have the highest taxes and fees in Vietnam.
