How to trace the flow of digital currency on blockchain transactions.

Cryptocurrency transactions on the blockchain may seem anonymous, but they still leave a trace. Digital currency tracing technology can identify the person behind each transaction.

Blockchain is often seen as "anonymous territory" - users simply create a wallet address and freely buy and sell without having to provide personal information.

In reality, each wallet on the blockchain is just a random string of characters, not directly linked to a real-life identity. This characteristic leads many people to mistakenly believe that cryptocurrency transactions are completely anonymous.

In fact, every transaction on the blockchain is publicly recorded on a distributed ledger. Each time money is transferred, data about the sending wallet address, receiving wallet address, amount of money, and time of the transaction are clearly displayed on the network.

Thus, the journey of a cryptocurrency leaves a trace within the system. The key point is that while the blockchain system knows where and when the money has been transferred, it does not reveal who is behind each wallet address.

How do you track cryptocurrency transactions on the blockchain?

Cryptocurrency tracing essentially involves tracking the chain of transactions recorded on the blockchain. Analysts use publicly available data from the blockchain ledger to monitor how money moves through each associated wallet.

Thanks to supporting tools, they can create a money flow map, describing which wallets the money passed through and in what chronological order. This process helps to pinpoint suspicious wallets, facilitating further investigation.

Specifically, each transaction chain typically has a beginning and an end point. The beginning point is where the currency is introduced into the system, such as when a user deposits money from their bank account to buy cryptocurrency. The end point is when the cryptocurrency is withdrawn from the blockchain system – usually when a user sells the cryptocurrency for real money through a centralized exchange.

On centralized cryptocurrency exchanges, users are required to verify their identity (KYC) when opening an account. Therefore, when cryptocurrency flows to an exchange that uses KYC, the true identity of the cryptocurrency owner can be revealed.

Investigators will work with the exchange to determine who the account holder is who received the cryptocurrency and what they did with it. Based on information provided by the exchange, authorities can track down the identity of the person who conducted the seemingly anonymous blockchain transaction.

In other words, while blockchain allows nameless transactions, traces still remain when money enters financial systems linked to real-world identities.

Obstacles in blockchain transaction tracing

Blockchain transaction tracing is a complex task and not always successful. Many fraudsters in the cryptocurrency world seek to conceal their tracks using sophisticated methods, making it difficult for investigators. The main obstacles in tracing cryptocurrency transactions include:

Cryptocurrency "mixing" service:Cybercriminals can use tools called cryptocurrency mixers to erase transaction traces. These tools mix funds from various sources and create a series of small transactions, making it nearly impossible to trace a specific flow of money. Once the funds are "mixed," it's very difficult to determine where the original money went without specialized assistance.

Distributed through multiple intermediary wallets:To mislead investigators, fraudsters often transfer funds through numerous intermediary wallets and split them into many different transactions. This complex process, involving dozens of transfer steps, makes manual analysis extremely time-consuming and labor-intensive. However, each of these intermediate steps can inadvertently provide additional clues, especially if errors or unusual transaction patterns appear during the transfer process.

Lack of cooperation from the exchange:Many overseas cryptocurrency exchanges are unwilling to cooperate with investigators. Some lack local legal representation, and they refuse to provide user data to third parties without a formal request from law enforcement. This hesitation or lack of cooperation from the exchanges slows down the process of identifying the true identities behind the wallets.

In cases where criminals employ sophisticated techniques to erase evidence, authorities are forced to combine traditional investigative methods with blockchain data, rather than relying solely on it.

For example, investigators may need to gather evidence in the real world, track the activities of suspects, or coordinate with international law enforcement agencies to track down the perpetrator.

Contact tracing technology supports effective investigations.

With the rise of cryptocurrency crime, technological solutions for tracing the flow of cryptocurrencies are proving increasingly useful. Many technology experts in Vietnam have developed advanced blockchain analysis tools, allowing for more automated and accurate tracking of cryptocurrency movements.

When analyzing a case, experts typically focus on data at the beginning and end points of the cryptocurrency flow to model the transaction journey.

In this way, they can paint a comprehensive picture of the money's trajectory and pinpoint potential suspects. After completing the analysis and mapping the money flow, the tracing team will forward the results to the investigating authorities.

From there, law enforcement combined technological data with traditional investigative methods to ultimately determine the identity of the mastermind.

Cryptocurrency tracing technology also contributes to building a more transparent and secure environment for digital asset transactions. Knowing that every transaction can be traced back to its source will somewhat deter those who intend to commit crimes in cyberspace.

Risk warning for cryptocurrency investors.

Despite the increasing development of tracking tools and techniques to protect users, the cryptocurrency market itself still harbors many risks. Experts warn that all investments in cryptocurrencies carry very high risks. Without in-depth knowledge and experience, investors should ideally avoid blindly participating, as investing in cryptocurrencies is essentially a gamble.

If you still want to try your hand at this type of asset, you should only use an amount of capital that is within your means and prioritize choosing reputable cryptocurrencies that have been around for a long time and have a large market capitalization.
