On March 30, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court held a first-instance trial and sentenced the defendant Vu Dinh Duc Anh (28 years old; residing in Ho Chi Minh City) to 19 years in prison for "murder".

According to the indictment, at approximately 11 PM on January 18, 2017, Vu Dinh Duc Anh went to his girlfriend's house on Vinh Hoi Street, District 4. Upon arrival, Duc Anh parked his motorbike in front of Mr. Tran Minh Chanh's house (49 years old; a neighbor) and stood talking with his girlfriend. A short while later, Duc Anh and his girlfriend had a disagreement which led to a loud argument.

Mr. Chánh heard the loud noise and went out to inquire about the situation and reprimand him, which led to an argument with Đức Anh. Mr. Chánh hit Đức Anh, but the young man fought back.

At this point, Nguyen Van Tuan (Mr. Chanh's nephew) and Tran Minh Tam (Mr. Chanh's son) saw their family member being beaten and ran out to help. Tuan used an iron bar to hit Duc Anh on the head and left thigh.

Duc Anh ran to a nearby noodle shop, grabbed a knife, and returned to chase after his opponent. Seeing this, Mr. Chanh ran to intervene but was stabbed by Duc Anh, resulting in his immediate death due to a punctured heart and multiple injuries.

After committing the crime, Duc Anh fled but was quickly apprehended by the police.
