With the aim of educating life skills and creating a healthy cultural environment for students when using social media, since the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year, Dong Son 2 High School (Dong Son district, Thanh Hoa province) has assigned the school's Youth Union to implement requirements for students when using Facebook.

Since the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year, Dong Son 2 High School has been disseminating information and implementing several requirements regarding the use of social media by its students.

Requirements for students of Dong Son 2 High School when using Facebook.

Based on observations at Dong Son 2 High School, to ensure that students' use of Facebook is culturally appropriate, the school has assigned the Youth Union to disseminate guidelines on social media usage to homeroom teachers.

Through school board meetings, homeroom teacher meetings, and flag-raising ceremonies, the school's Youth Union has also disseminated and publicized the six requirements mentioned above regarding the use of Facebook to the school's students.

Ms. Tran Thi Phuong Thuy, Vice Principal of Dong Son 2 High School, shared: "After reviewing the regulations, and finding them suitable for the students' age group, and furthermore to avoid undesirable consequences when students use social media, the school assigned the Youth Union to implement this initiative."

After outlining the requirements for using social media, the school did not impose strict rules, but disseminated information to homeroom teachers during council meetings, homeroom teacher meetings, and extracurricular activities. In the implementation process, some classes used oral communication, while others developed written guidelines to make it easier for students to remember and understand.

Ms. Tran Thi Phuong Thuy, Vice Principal of Dong Son 2 High School, shared this with reporters.

"After monitoring for some time, we've observed that students at our school no longer access social media in a harmful way. Our teachers also have Facebook accounts to monitor and track students' behavior on social media. We haven't seen any instances of students using Facebook to negatively impact their families or the school, nor any comments or shares about inappropriate content," Ms. Thuy stated.

According to the school's observations, the students of Dong Son 2 High School have been using Facebook simply to share information about their studies, and to inquire about their teachers and friends.

“Using social media is a double-edged sword; besides sharing experiences and difficulties in studying, it can also be the cause of conflicts and misunderstandings leading to undesirable consequences. Although there have been no negative incidents so far, with the aim of educating life skills and creating a healthy cultural environment on social media for students, the school has assigned the Youth Union to implement requirements for students,” Ms. Thuy added.

After receiving the requests from the Youth Union, the school found the content suitable and proceeded to implement and expand them. The school is currently reviewing and surveying how the requests are being implemented, as well as gathering feedback from parents and students, in order to make adjustments and develop them into school regulations.

Mr. Ha Viet Phuong, Secretary of the Youth Union of Dong Son 2 High School, said: "In reality, young people in general and students in particular use Facebook a lot, and some of their posts have negatively impacted individuals, organizations, or groups. Based on that, the school's Youth Union has implemented some guidelines for students' use of Facebook."

To ensure students use social media in a healthy and respectful manner, the school has set out requirements for using Facebook.

These are observations based on common practice and have been implemented by other units. Above all, the aim is to help students in the school become more aware of how to use social media and contribute to making their use of social media more meaningful and cultured.

"The implementation of this program has only just begun, so we cannot yet assess the specific results, and we haven't received any feedback from parents or students regarding any issues with the Student Union or the school. These activities are currently only for informational purposes," Mr. Phuong shared.

According to Ms. Ngo Thi Ha, homeroom teacher of class 10A2 at Dong Son 2 High School, she educates students on the above requirements in class and hopes that students will use social media responsibly.

“After the school's Youth Union Executive Committee disseminated some guidelines on social media use, we launched a campaign in the classroom. Normally, when going online, some students still use foul language and swear a lot. But after implementing the school's guidelines, there have been noticeable changes, and students no longer use foul language, swear, or especially provoke each other online,” Ms. Ha shared.
