Oranges and tangerines from Quynh in Tet season

With the potential advantages of land, in recent years, the mountainous communes of Quynh Luu district have invested in building many effective economic models, especially new models such as PQ1 sweet tangerines, Valencia oranges, Xa Doai oranges...

The family of Mr. Tran Danh Pho - Dong Xuan hamlet, Quynh Thang commune is one of the pioneers in bringing orange trees to experimentally plant in the Quynh Thang hill area. With 4.5 hectares of hill garden land, his family currently plans to plant 2.2 hectares of oranges and tangerines, including 1.2 hectares of PQ1 sweet tangerines; 0.4 hectares of Valencia oranges and 0.6 hectares of Xa Doai oranges. It is expected that during the harvest season of the Dinh Dau New Year 2017, the 3 plots of oranges and tangerines grown for business by Mr. Pho's family will yield about 15 tons of oranges and 30 tons of tangerines. With the selling price of 40,000 VND/kg of oranges and 15,000 VND/kg of tangerines purchased at the garden, his income will reach no less than 1 billion VND.

Mr. Tran Danh Pho excitedly said: “Growing oranges and tangerines is much more effective than other crops. Tangerines are sold during Tet until January or February, depending on the number of buyers. The current output is very good, there is nothing to worry about.”

Each Valencia orange tree can yield from 70 - 80 kg.

Previously, the traditional crops of the people in the mountainous commune of Quynh Thang were pineapple, sugarcane, cassava, etc. However, these traditional crops had low productivity and unstable prices because they depended on the purchasing factory. Therefore, income was not high and unstable.

In order to promote the potential advantages of local land and increase economic value per unit area, in recent years, Quynh Thang commune has encouraged and encouraged people to bring in new varieties of trees for experimental planting, including Valencia orange, Xa Doai orange and PQ1 sweet tangerine. At first, only a few households in the commune boldly planted them for experimental planting, but now, after about 5 years of being attached to Quynh Thang hill land, these citrus varieties have brought high economic efficiency and affirmed to be the highest value crop ever in the locality.

Up to now, the oranges have turned yellow, the skin is smooth, sweet and ready to be sold to serve the Dinh Dau Tet market.

Oranges and tangerines are relatively easy to grow citrus trees, require little care, require little investment and have high profits, so up to now, Quynh Thang commune has expanded its area to about 50 hectares. However, a problem is that the locality must determine the planning area and plant with an appropriate area to promote efficiency, ensure high prices, and avoid the situation of massive planting with too large an area, which will cause difficulties for output, thereby affecting income value.

Mr. Ho Dien Thang - Vice Chairman of Quynh Thang Commune People's Committee said: "From growing oranges and tangerines, some households have had a relatively good harvest since last year. This year, preparing for Tet, households expect to have higher income because the yield is larger. This model in the locality has no problem growing clean oranges, ensuring the needs of people during Tet. This is a new model but very effective, so far no tree has given as much profit."

The Valencia orange garden of Mr. Tran Danh Pho's family - Dong Xuan hamlet, Quynh Thang commune has entered the 6th crop.

The output of oranges and tangerines is currently very stable, some batches have been purchased by traders since the beginning of the year, waiting until the time before Tet to harvest. According to the people, the soil and climate here are suitable for oranges and tangerines to grow well. Oranges ripen evenly, have a lot of juice, a strong sweet taste, high yield, each tree can reach 70 - 80 kg. For PQ1 sweet tangerines, the skin is thin and easy to peel, has a lot of juice and is especially eye-catching dark green, yielding 200 - 300 kg/tree.

In the joy of welcoming the New Year of the Rooster 2017, orange and tangerine growers in the mountainous commune of Quynh Thang are even more excited because this year's crop has brought in a large income. Throughout the gardens, the golden yellow of oranges and the rich green of tangerines have shone, and the colors of Spring have come knocking on the doors of every family.
