Local officials embezzled funds intended for the commemoration of fallen soldiers.

The person under investigation is Truong Van Dat (born in 1982). From March 2023 to August 2023, Dat was entrusted with managing over 186 million VND in martyrs' worship allowances for 2023 in Lam Son commune to pay 128 families who worship 133 martyrs.

With the intention of profiting,misappropriation of moneyFrom the aforementioned allowance for ancestral worship, Dat abused his position and authority. After receiving the money, Dat only paid 14 million VND to 10 families who worshipped 10 martyrs. Subsequently, he forged the signatures and handwriting of the remaining 118 families who worshipped 123 martyrs and created settlement documents to submit to the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Thanh Mien district, thereby embezzling a total of over 172 million VND for personal use.

Immediately after receiving information about the incident, the leaders of Thanh Mien District Police directed the Criminal, Economic, and Narcotics Investigation Team to promptly investigate and clarify the related actions of the suspect in order to strictly handle the case according to the law.

Following investigation and verification, on September 15, 2023, the Criminal Investigation Agency of Thanh Mien District Police initiated a criminal case, indicted the suspect, and detained Truong Van Dat for 4 months on charges of "Embezzlement of property," while continuing to expand the investigation to clarify related acts.
