Solutions for waste management in Que Phong commune are urgently needed.
In the area of the waste treatment project in Que Phong commune, the indiscriminate dumping of household waste is quite common. Waste is not only accumulating in temporary landfill pits but also overflowing onto the embankment and along the internal roads.
According to observations, a considerable amount of waste has been accumulated in the project area. However, since the landfill is not yet officially operational, the waste brought there poses a potential risk to the surrounding environment.
Currently, Kim Son Environmental Cooperative is the unit directly responsible for collecting household waste in the area and transporting it to this designated collection point.
Meanwhile, the amount of daily household waste generated in Que Phong commune is on the rise, especially in residential areas located off the main roads. In reality, the Kim Son Environmental Cooperative is currently only tasked with collecting waste along the central road of the former Kim Son town. In most other residential areas, residents have to dispose of or transport their waste themselves, leading to widespread dumping along roadsides, streams, and vacant land, causing unsightly conditions and environmental pollution.
Mr. Pham Van Toan, Director of Kim Son Environmental Cooperative, said that waste treatment options such as sanitary landfill or incineration have been considered, but so far there is no unified solution, especially regarding securing the necessary funding for implementation.
“The cooperative’s biggest wish is for the local government to consider expanding the waste collection area and to soon have a plan for waste treatment at the collection site. This would not only fundamentally solve the problem of household waste but also create stable jobs for cooperative members and maximize the effectiveness of the invested equipment,” Mr. Toan shared.
The former Que Phong District waste treatment plant project is being built in Bon village, Que Phong commune, covering an area of over 20,000 m², with a total investment of over 56 billion VND. To date, the project has completed phase 1 with a total investment of over 35 billion VND. Phase 1 of the project includes site leveling, construction of internal dike systems and landfill pits, completed at the end of 2023.
Phase 2 was planned to continue investing in items such as internal transportation, rainwater drainage systems, management and auxiliary facilities, domestic water supply systems, green fences, environmental monitoring systems, domestic electricity supply, weighing stations, and an operations building. However, to date, the items in Phase 2 have not yet been implemented.
Mr. Luu Van Hung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Que Phong commune, said that at the commune's Party Congress for the 2025-2030 term, the locality issued an action program on the collection and treatment of household waste. Regarding the waste treatment site project, the commune is researching suitable solutions, including a method using microbial enzymes to minimize environmental pollution. However, the biggest difficulty currently is funding.
