School lighting conditions need to be improved.
Lighting in classrooms directly impacts students' eyesight, concentration, and learning efficiency. Surveys conducted in many schools in Nghe An province show that lighting conditions in some classrooms do not meet standards. Implementing models of classrooms that meet lighting standards and are energy-efficient is contributing to improving the learning environment and protecting students' visual health.

According to a survey by the Nghe An Energy Saving Center, the lighting systems in classrooms at several schools in the province are still inadequate. Some classrooms lack natural light, the electrical systems are outdated, and the use of fluorescent or compact bulbs does not ensure sufficient illumination. Some rooms are only equipped with 4-6 light bulbs, failing to meet the lighting requirements for teaching and learning.
Meanwhile, lighting directly affects students' eyesight, posture while studying, concentration, and learning ability. The rate of refractive errors among children aged 0-15 is currently recorded at 15-20%. Inappropriate lighting conditions are considered one of the factors that can impact school-age visual health.
Notably, limitations in facilities and lighting conditions are often more apparent in schools in rural and mountainous areas. Many classrooms are old, with dilapidated facilities; stained walls, trees covering windows, and limited natural light.

In response to this situation, the Nghe An Energy Saving Center has implemented a model of classrooms that meet lighting standards and save energy using LED lighting systems.
Before installation, the Center conducted a comprehensive survey and assessment of the lighting conditions in the classrooms, from the intensity, illuminance, and glare of the light to the use and arrangement of lighting equipment. Related factors such as the color of desks and chairs, flooring, walls, windows, and natural lighting conditions were also considered.
Based on the survey, the lighting system was designed and arranged to suit the classroom space, using high-efficiency LED lights to minimize glare and ensure relatively even light distribution.
Technical inspection revealed that the average illuminance in the classrooms reached 300 lux, with the lowest illuminance level at 60%, meeting the requirements for teaching and learning activities.
Mr. Nguyen Van Son, a teacher at Nghi Huong Secondary School, said: "The model not only improves lighting conditions but also aims for energy-saving and efficient use. Replacing old lighting fixtures with high-efficiency LED lights helps reduce electricity consumption, thereby reducing operating costs for the school."

Based on the practical needs of educational institutions, the Nghe An Energy Saving Center has supported the implementation of various classroom models in each school, thereby gradually creating a learning environment with more suitable lighting conditions.
Initial results show that the model has received consensus and positive feedback from the school and parents. Improving the lighting system not only creates a more favorable learning environment but also contributes to raising awareness among teachers and students about safe, economical, and efficient electricity use.
In 2026, the Center installed and handed over 72 model classrooms meeting lighting and energy-saving standards using LED lights to schools in wards and communes throughout the province.

The implementation of this model in many localities shows that improving school lighting conditions does not necessarily have to start with large-scale investment solutions. Accurate surveys of the current situation, appropriate design, and selection of high-efficiency equipment can simultaneously address two requirements: improving lighting quality and saving energy.
Besides its technical and economic benefits, the model is also significant for building a safe and friendly educational environment. When lighting is properly distributed, minimizing glare and insufficient light, students have more favorable conditions for learning; teachers also find it easier to teach.
This is also one of the specific activities aimed at bringing energy-saving and efficient use into schools, while demonstrating the coordination between the Ministry of Industry and Trade, local authorities, and educational institutions in caring for the learning conditions, health, and long-term development of students.

In reality, lighting conditions among schools in the province are still uneven. Besides schools with relatively good facilities, there are still many classrooms built many years ago, with outdated electrical systems and lighting equipment.
In particular, in some schools in rural and mountainous areas, the utilization of natural light is limited due to classroom design, trees obscuring windows, or the lack of comprehensive infrastructure upgrades.
Mr. Hoang Minh Tuan, Director of the Center for Industry and Trade Development Support and Consulting, Department of Industry and Trade, shared: Improving school lighting needs to be viewed not only from the perspective of replacing light bulbs but also in relation to the overall classroom space. From the electrical system, lighting equipment, installation location to the color of walls, ceilings, desks and chairs, and the ability to utilize natural light, everything needs to be considered appropriately.
Along with investment and equipment replacement, attention should also be paid to public awareness campaigns and guidance on the use of lighting systems. Teachers and students need to be equipped with knowledge about safe and economical electricity use; schools should proactively inspect and maintain lighting systems, promptly addressing areas that are poorly lit or cause glare.
In the coming period, it is necessary to expand the scope of the model's implementation; at the same time, strengthen propaganda and guidance on the safe, economical, and efficient use of lighting systems. Based on the models already implemented, the gradual standardization of classroom lighting systems is expected to contribute to improving learning conditions, enhancing energy efficiency, and building a safe, friendly, green, and sustainable school environment in the province.
