(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of October 25th, at Do Luong Town Primary School, the Department of Education and Training organized a workshop on "Building and innovating library activities and developing a reading culture in primary schools".

Attending the workshop were representatives from the Department of Education and Training, the People's Committee of Do Luong district, the Nghe An School Books and Equipment Company, along with a large number of teachers, specialists, and leaders from the education departments of 21 districts, cities, and towns in the province.

The cultural performance, created by the teachers and students of Do Luong Town Primary School, aims to encourage and motivate students to participate in reading.

In primary schools, developing a reading culture and fostering reading habits is increasingly important. Reading helps children acquire social and cultural values; it forms and develops skills in receiving information and knowledge – crucial elements contributing to the formation of their character. It also helps them receive selective information in the context of information explosion, including much misleading and biased information rampant on social media today.

At the workshop, delegates heard presentations from the Education sector of several localities on building school library models, such as Do Luong (100% of primary schools have libraries, of which 61% meet school library standards); Dien Chau (100% of primary schools have libraries, and every year they organize a reading festival on April 21st to encourage children's passion for books); Quy Chau (16 out of 16 primary schools have effectively functioning libraries, 100% of schools have sufficient bookshelves and seating for teachers and students in the reading room)...

Also within the framework of the workshop, delegates focused on discussing issues including: the importance of building and renovating libraries and developing a reading culture; the current state of building, orienting, and innovating library activities and developing a reading culture in primary schools.

Through this discussion, delegates unanimously agreed that, in order to successfully build a reading culture for high school students, in addition to investing in reading rooms, it is necessary to diversify the book selection and other facilities serving reading. Schools need to plan to build libraries that suit the specific characteristics of the school, the reading preferences of different groups and regions; and regularly organize storytelling competitions based on books and essay writing competitions on relevant themes.

In challenging circumstances, schools can exchange books with each other to enrich their library collections; promote awareness among administrators, teachers, staff, parents, and students about the role and significance of reading culture. At the same time, they can promote the socialization of education, mobilizing support from parents, organizations, and individuals to increase the number of books in the library.

Furthermore, the Education sector must regularly organize training courses to improve the capacity and professional skills of library staff so that they have better guidance in purchasing books to serve teaching and learning in schools; coordinate with the School Book and Equipment Company and the provincial library to organize annual "Reading Festivals" at the school, district, and provincial levels. In addition, the sector needs to promptly approve and submit to the Provincial People's Committee the Project "Innovating library activities and developing a reading culture in general schools" to have a legal basis for implementation.
