Until when can someone with myopia exceeding 1.5 diopters be granted a temporary deferment from military service?

Mr. A. (22 years old, currently pursuing a Master's degree in Hanoi) recently received a summons for a military service health examination. Following the examination, the health examination board concluded that Mr. A. has 2 degrees of myopia and is deemed unfit for military service, thus granting him a temporary deferment. Mr. A. is wondering: if I don't undergo eye surgery or wear corrective glasses, how long will my deferment last, and will I have to undergo another health examination every year? This is a concern raised by Mr. Nguyen Van A. (Cua Lo Ward, Nghe An Province).

Reply:According to current regulations on health standards for conscription, cases of eye diseases such as myopia or hyperopia with prescriptions between 1.5 and 3 diopters will be classified as unfit for military service (Category 3 or higher) and may be eligible for temporary deferment. The specific situation will be determined by the Military Service Health Examination Council.

Clause 3 of Article 41 of the 2015 Military Service Law stipulates the following regarding temporary postponement and exemption from military conscription:

3. Citizens who are subject to temporary deferment of military service as stipulated in Clause 1 of this Article, if the reason for deferment no longer exists, shall be called up for military service.

Citizens who are eligible for temporary deferment or exemption from military service as stipulated in Clauses 1 and 2 of this Article, if they volunteer, will be considered for selection and conscription.

Therefore, within the age range for conscription.(from the age of 18 until December 31st of the year the citizen turns 27)Citizens who fall under one of the categories eligible for temporary deferment of military service will have their conscription deferred until the reason for deferment no longer exists.

If, after a medical examination, the Military Service Medical Examination Board concludes that a citizen is not healthy enough to serve in the military, the citizen will be granted a temporary deferment. If, after the examination, the citizen's health meets the Board's conclusion and they do not fall under any exemption or deferment categories, they may participate in military service.

Note: Annually, if ordered to undergo a health examination, citizens must still do so to receive a conclusion from the Military Service Health Examination Board.
