The recently uncovered RTX 4090 graphics card scam reveals a level of sophistication in counterfeit manufacturing, capable of deceiving even hardware-savvy users.

The Northwest Repair channel recently reported a rare case involving an Asus ROG Strix RTX 4090 graphics card purchased via eBay. Despite its nearly new appearance, the device was completely unrecognizable when connected to test systems. Through extensive disassembly and in-depth testing, experts uncovered an organized scam with extremely high levels of craftsmanship.

Laser engraving trick "transforms" defective components into high-end parts.

The most sophisticated aspect of this scam lies in altering the information on the chip's surface. The fraudsters ground down the surface of old or damaged chips, then used a laser engraver to overprint the RTX 4090 specifications. Specialized model numbers like "AD102-300-A1" and the Nvidia logo were reproduced so accurately that they were virtually indistinguishable to the naked eye.

Besides chip cores, RAM memory chips are also being counterfeited using similar methods. Experts believe these may be products from professional workshops that collect outdated or damaged components for illegal refurbishment. Under the influence of heat and chemicals, these components are brutally manipulated to give them the appearance of a high-performance product.

Identifying signs and risks from the used parts market.

Despite the sophisticated laser etching technique, signs of fraud are still visible under a microscope. These anomalies include traces of ultrasonic cleaning, inconsistent solder joints, and a color difference in the epoxy resin surrounding the chip core compared to the manufacturer's standard.

The explosion of AI technology has led to a surge in demand for high-performance graphics cards like the RTX 4090, creating opportunities for scams to flourish. Purchasing equipment from unreliable sources or through private transactions carries significant risks. Users are advised to carefully check the seller's history or prioritize authorized dealers to ensure their rights and genuine warranty policies are in place.
