According to data from the Vietnam Customs Department, fertilizer exports in the first four months of 2026 reached nearly 1.2 million tons, earning over $589 million. Compared to the same period last year, the volume of fertilizer exports increased by 56% and the value doubled. In April 2026 alone, the volume of fertilizer exports was 2.3 times higher than the same period last year, reaching 379,088 tons. Increased selling prices helped boost fertilizer export revenue in April by 3.3 times, reaching nearly $230 million.
Fertilizer prices have surged due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for transporting raw materials for fertilizer production, caused by tensions in the Middle East. Global demand for fertilizers is high as it coincides with the planting season. The average export price of fertilizers in April was $605 per ton, a 41% increase compared to the same period last year. Since the beginning of 2026, export fertilizer prices have increased by approximately 51%.
Cambodia was Vietnam's largest fertilizer import market in the first four months of 2026, accounting for 17% of total imports. However, this share narrowed significantly compared to the same period last year (27%). The Philippines became the second largest customer with an 8% share, up from 5% in the same period. Fertilizer sales to the Philippines increased sharply by 164% in volume and 238% in value. Fertilizer exports to Thailand recorded a dramatic increase of 333% in volume and 470% in value. Myanmar also saw increases of 178% in volume and 204% in value.
Thailand seeks alternative fertilizer sources from Russia.
According to Bloomberg, Thailand is urgently seeking alternative fertilizer sources amid escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. The Thai Foreign Minister has traveled to Oman to negotiate an emergency fuel supply agreement. The Thai Agriculture Minister is also in talks with Russia to secure an annual supply of 1–2 million tons of urea at preferential prices. Major producers such as PhosAgro PJSC and UralChem Co. have expressed interest in long-term contracts. More than half of Thailand's imported oil and urea originates from the Middle East, transported through the Strait of Hormuz. Pressure from rising input costs is mounting ahead of the peak planting season from May to July.
