Gold prices this afternoon, December 16th, in the global market.
On the world market, as of 12:00 PM on December 18, 2025 (Vietnam time), the spot gold price reached US$4,332.84 per ounce, up 0.22% from the previous session. Converted using the Vietcombank exchange rate of VND 26,408/USD, the world gold price is equivalent to approximately VND 137.94 million per tael (approximately 37.85 grams), excluding taxes and fees.
According to market data, the DXY index, which measures the strength of the US dollar against six major currencies including EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, and CHF, rose slightly by 0.03% to 98.43 points. Precious metals traders closely monitor the movements of the US dollar because a strong or weak USD directly affects the price of gold worldwide.
Global gold prices surged after the US Department of Labor released its non-farm payrolls report, showing a weakening labor market. Specifically, the unemployment rate in November rose to 4.6%, the highest level in four years. This information was seen by many investors in the precious metals market as a signal reinforcing the likelihood that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) will continue to ease monetary policy in the near future.
During midweek trading, despite the absence of significant US economic data, international gold investment funds and traders continued to rely on the US Department of Labor's labor report to increase their long positions. Expectations of a Fed interest rate cut in 2026 continue to be seen as a supporting factor for the upward trend in gold prices in the medium and long term.
According to assessments by institutional investors in the international market, the Christmas and New Year holidays caused a significant decrease in trading volume on precious metals exchanges. Low liquidity led to wider price fluctuations in gold compared to normal periods.
Bas Kooijman, CEO and asset manager at DHF Capital SA, said the market is anticipating two interest rate cuts by the Fed in the first half of 2026. He believes this scenario will provide support for gold prices in the first two quarters of next year.
Besides monetary factors, the demand for risk hedging is also driven by geopolitical tensions. According to information from the White House, US President Donald Trump on December 17 ordered a "blockade" of sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela, increasing pressure on the government of President Nicolas Maduro. This move is considered by many market experts as a factor that has led investors to seek out gold more, thereby further supporting gold prices in the international market.
World gold price forecast: The upward trend continues after historical record highs.
The forecast for gold prices in 2025–2026 continues to lean towards a positive trend due to economic instability and monetary policy.
According to many international experts, the price of gold has reached a record high 48 times in 2025. This upward trend is linked to prolonged geopolitical tensions, net buying by central banks, and concerns about the global economic outlook. These factors form a crucial basis for gold price forecasts in the coming years.
Eric Strand, founder of AuAg Funds, told Kitco News that gold is still on track for a long-term uptrend. According to him, the current gold price forecast suggests the precious metal could reach $10,000 per ounce in the future, as its role as a store of value continues to strengthen.
Christopher Louney, a strategist at RBC Capital Markets, believes that the upward trend in gold is likely to continue into 2026, although at a slower pace than in 2025.
RBC forecasts gold prices to fluctuate in the range of $4,500–$5,000 per ounce in 2026. According to Louney, amidst numerous macroeconomic risks, gold remains the least hampered asset, with a tendency to move sideways or upward.
Analysts at BMO Capital Markets also offered a positive outlook, suggesting that gold prices could peak in the first half of 2026, averaging around $4,600 per ounce. The BMO report pointed to key supporting factors including the possibility of lower global interest rates and a weakening US dollar, further bolstering gold's appeal as a portfolio diversification and safe haven.
From the perspectives of AuAg Funds, RBC Capital Markets to BMO Capital Markets, gold price forecasts all indicate that the precious metal will remain central to global investors' risk hedging strategies, especially in the context of ongoing economic and geopolitical uncertainties.
