Honduras is considered one of the countries with the highest crime rates. About a year before his assassination, Peralta had publicly condemned acts of violence and killing.

“My country is miserable because there are so many murderers. It seems killing is becoming fashionable. People like that don’t deserve to live,” Peralta wrote on Twitter in 2014.

Peralta returned to playing in Honduras in January 2015, after two years with Glasgow Rangers in Scotland. The player and his wife also recently welcomed a three-month-old daughter.
