Has the Vietnamese-French player disappeared from Song Lam Nghe An?

Expected to bring a fresh impetus to the wing positions in the second half of the 2025/26 V.League season, Phi Long Karim Tran has yet to be included in the Song Lam Nghe An squad.

The mid-season transfer window of the 2025/26 V.League saw a special name arrive at Song Lam Nghe An: Phi Long Karim Tran. Born in 2004, holding French and Algerian citizenship, standing 1.76m tall, right-footed, and having previously played for FC United Richelle in the 2de Nationale ACFF (equivalent to the fourth tier of Belgian football), Karim was described as a fast player who performs well as a winger or right-wing forward. Given SLNA's lack of attacking options on both flanks, this signing was considered a cost-effective and strategically sound choice.

However, after more than a month since his appearance, Karim's contribution has been almost negligible. He has only played just over 30 minutes in the match against Hanoi FC, coming on at the start of the second half when SLNA switched to a 3-4-3 system to find an equalizer. Positioned in his preferred position on the left wing, Karim played with great effort, but what he produced were mainly dribbles into the center, lacking clear crosses or truly game-changing moments. In the 87th minute, he left the field, and two minutes later SLNA scored. That detail wasn't decisive, but it's enough to raise questions about the extent of this player's influence.

Since that match, Karim has disappeared from the starting lineup. In the 4-1 victory against The Cong Viettel, when SLNA reverted to their familiar 4-4-2 formation and played brilliantly, he was not used. This coincidence further fueled public speculation about whether Karim is truly suited to the tactical system that coach Van Sy Son is building.

The reality is that Karim's biggest problem isn't his mentality. According to internal assessments, he trains seriously, is eager to learn, and has a strong desire to prove himself. But professional football demands more than just attitude; it also requires tactical adaptability and practical skills. Coming from a semi-professional background in Europe, Karim has never played in a true professional league. Therefore, the pace, intensity, and tactical demands of the V.League represent a huge leap.

In 11-a-side football, team spacing, off-ball movement, and situational awareness are crucial. Karim shows limitations in these areas. He handles the ball quite simply, lacks variation in tempo, and doesn't have a Plan B when opponents anticipate his moves. His crossing ability lacks the necessary accuracy to serve the forwards in the penalty area. With his not-so-outstanding physique and weak in one-on-one challenges, he also struggles to gain an advantage against experienced V.League defenders.

Another factor is internal competition. On the flanks, SLNA has more stable options like Ngo Van Luong or Manh Quynh. They aren't outstanding, but they understand the system, maintain team formation, and meet defensive requirements when needed. In a team that prioritizes balance, the coach is reluctant to risk players who haven't fully adapted.

It's also important to acknowledge that the Karim contract wasn't a huge financial gamble. The transfer fee and compensation package were considered appropriate for Song Lam Nghe An's limited resources. However, from a professional standpoint, recruiting a player who hasn't been tested in top-level football always carries risks. Before joining SLNA, Karim had a trial at Hong Linh Ha Tinh but wasn't retained.

It's perhaps still too early to conclude whether Karim is effective. The lesson from the case of Colombian foreign player Enrique, who was brought in at the beginning of the season and then quickly sold when the winter transfer window opened, remains relevant.

SLNA clearly cannot repeat its uncertain approach, even if the cost of each transfer may not be enormous. In professional football, a cheap contract does not necessarily mean saving money if professional performance is not guaranteed. When financial resources are tight, every personnel decision needs to be carefully considered to avoid waste, even small waste.

The story of Phi Long Karim Tran also reflects the reality of Vietnamese football teams in searching for and using overseas Vietnamese players. The label "trained in Europe" is not a guarantee of success. The difference between amateur and semi-professional football and the professional environment is enormous, from the pace of play and tactical requirements to the pressure to achieve results. To survive, players must simultaneously meet the requirements of technical skill, tactical thinking, and competitive spirit.

Karim arrived at SLNA with the hope of embarking on a new journey, perhaps even a long-term commitment to his father's hometown. However, to avoid continuing to be "invisible" in the squad, he needs more than just effort in training and clear professional progress. Karim must prove that he is not just a media-driven signing, but truly capable of meeting the demands of the V.League environment. Only by demonstrating his value through concrete performances can he turn his desire to contribute to Vietnamese football in the long term into reality.
