Fans are allowed to vote for the FIFA Best Player award.

FIFA's new voting method could make the Best Player award even more attractive and engage hundreds of millions of fans worldwide.

In the voting method recently announced by FIFA, the votes of national team coaches and captains only account for 50% of the total. The remaining 50% will be divided equally between two groups: representatives from approximately 200 media outlets worldwide and a public online vote for fans.

Fans will therefore contribute significantly to the outcome. This is also the first time that fans worldwide have been able to participate in voting for one of the most important individual awards in football.

"This new approach will bring more joy to the sport that we all love," said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Previously, from 1991 to 2009, the FIFA Best Player award was voted on only by coaches and captains of national teams. Between 2010 and 2015, this award merged with France Football magazine's Ballon d'Or to create the single FIFA Ballon d'Or award.

Last September, France Football announced its withdrawal from its alliance with FIFA. The magazine will organize the Ballon d'Or award itself, as it did from 1956 to 2009, and will restore the voting method to rely solely on votes from journalists.

France Football will announce the results of the 2016 Ballon d'Or before the new year. Meanwhile, fans will have to wait until January 9, 2017, at the FIFA Football Gala, to find out the results of the FIFA Best Player award.
