'Father and Son, Ten Thousand Miles': The Unexpected Journey of Artist Ho Viet
Instead of going to a strange place, artist Ho Viet and his daughter have a journey to discover "old and new" things right in the Central Highlands in the program 'Father and Son, Thousand Miles'.
In the program "Father and Son, Thousand Miles", artist Ho Viet and his daughter Tue Nhi (Tigon) took a different journey: discovering cultural values and connecting with the community right on the familiar land of the Central Highlands. This journey brought many unexpected experiences, helping the father and daughter to look at things that seemed old in a completely new way.
Discover indigenous culture from familiar things
Although the original plans were changed due to the weather, the father and son trip opened up special opportunities. They visited Kon Trang Long Loi village, met village elder A Thu - who is trying to preserve and teach gong culture to the younger generation. Although living just over 1 km away, this was the first time little Tigon had been to the village elder's house, listened to stories about traditional musical instruments and tried assembling a T'rung himself.
The excitement continued in the evening when father and son joined a gong and xoang dance class with the children in the village. While artist Ho Viet focused on learning the gong rhythm, Tigon happily joined in the graceful dances. The class ended with a lively performance, combining the sounds of gongs and traditional xoang dance.
Experience the life and work of the people
The journey of discovering new things continued when Tigon went to the coffee plantation with her father for the first time, even though it was only a few hundred meters from home. She was excited, actively asked questions and learned to sing along with the women in the village. This experience made artist Ho Viet realize that the interesting things right next to her were also valuable lessons for her children.
Afterwards, the father and son met artist Nguyen Nam, a wood sculptor from the Central Highlands. Tigon expressed his surprise at witnessing a lifeless piece of wood become a work of art. Through this, artist Ho Viet conveyed a lesson about the value of labor, creativity and the importance of preserving traditional culture.
Spreading community values through meaningful projects
The trip was not only about exploring culture but also an opportunity for the father and son to connect with nature and the community. They participated in the project “Bringing orchids back to the forest” that artist Ho Viet has been working on for many years. Next, the father and son joined the project “Bicycle Bank”, bringing bicycles to the Xop Secondary and Primary School in Quang Ngai Province, so that disadvantaged students could borrow them as a means of transportation to school.
In particular, the story of A Hao, a student who lost his mother and had to walk 7km to school every day, urged the father and son to visit the house. In the simple house, they talked, shared and encouraged the family, bringing warm and meaningful moments.
Lessons on the connection between father and son
The journey in "Father and Son, Thousand Miles" has become an opportunity for artist Ho Viet to inspire his daughter about the value of connection with people, nature and culture. At the same time, he himself also recognizes the positive values in the relationship between father and daughter.
The special episode concluding the journey of painter Ho Viet and his son will be broadcast at 7:10 a.m. on November 7 on VTV3 channel.
