(Baonghean.vn) - After being released from prison, Quang Van Ai bought a car and created a cover as a taxi driver to traffic narcotics. At the end of the year, he brought his son into a massive drug trafficking ring.

On the morning of January 3rd, the Nghe An Provincial Police held an awards ceremony for the 817K Special Task Force for their achievement in arresting a father and son involved in the trafficking of 5 kg of heroin, 8 kg of methamphetamine, and 400 ecstasy pills.

Previously, the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department discovered a large-scale illegal drug trafficking ring smuggling narcotics from Laos through unofficial border crossings into Ky Son district, Nghe An province, and then distributing them to northern provinces for consumption. Therefore, they established Special Case 817K to combat this ring.

After nearly three months of investigation, the special task force identified the ringleader as Quang Van Ai (born in 1976), residing in Chieu Luu commune, Ky Son district. Ai had a previous conviction for "Illegal trafficking of narcotics," with a 12-year prison sentence.

During the course of his imprisonment, Ai established connections with influential figures in society.

After being released from prison in 2012, Quang Van Ai, with his reckless nature, did not mend his ways but instead relapsed into addiction, quickly returning to a life of crime.

He created a cover for himself by posing as a taxi driver to conceal his long journeys, while also making it difficult for law enforcement to monitor him.

In early December 2017, upon receiving information that Ai was preparing to transport a large quantity of drugs, the special task force devised a plan and organized its operation accordingly. However, upon detecting unusual changes, Ai immediately instructed all members of the network to cease all activities, change all phone numbers, and alter the personnel and methods of drug trafficking. Consequently, solving the case proved extremely difficult.

At 6 PM on December 29, 2017, Ai drove a car with license plate 38A-016.64 around to mislead authorities. When he found no one following him, Ai, along with his son Quang Van Toan, set off to deliver the goods north. With the cunning of a seasoned driver, Ai would hide in a different location after a short distance to check and evade the police.

At Doc Bam, Cam Son commune (Anh Son district), the special task force, in coordination with the Anh Son District Police; Traffic Control Team 1-7 (Road and Rail Traffic Police Department) and several related professional units, successfully surrounded and arrested Quang Van Ai and his son.

The items seized from the car included 8kg of crystal methamphetamine, 5 blocks of heroin, and 400 synthetic drug pills, all cleverly concealed in the front and rear compartments of the vehicle.

At the awards ceremony, Colonel Nguyen Manh Hung - Deputy Director of the Provincial Police - congratulated the forces involved in the special investigation on their exceptionally outstanding achievements. He also expressed his hope that, with the results achieved, the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department would continue to build upon its success to effectively combat and prevent crime in the area, contributing to maintaining security and order so that people can enjoy a safe and peaceful Lunar New Year.
