(Baonghean.vn) - On February 23, the Ministry of Information and Communications announced that, starting from March 1, 2024, mobile operators are prohibited from allowing new mobile phones that only support 2G technology and are not on the list of certified 2G phones published by the Ministry (Telecommunications Department).

At the same time, mobile telecommunications companies are responsible for widely communicating the implementation of solutions to control and block connections to this mobile telecommunications network to their customers; and publishing contact information for resolving customer complaints.

The Ministry of Information and Communications' announcement also stated that people with questions or complaints about 2G phones not connecting to the network should call the customer service hotline of their mobile phone provider for support and guidance.

This is considered the latest move to realize the policies and directions issued in recent times to discontinue 2G mobile technology and popularize smartphones to promote the digital economy and digital society.

Turning off 2G signals will bring people into the digital environment.

The complete shutdown of 2G networks aims to utilize frequency resources for modern telecommunications technologies, in line with development trends.

One of the benefits of shutting down 2G is that it will encourage 100% of Vietnamese people to use smartphones. This will give people access to a wider range of digital services and create a high-quality digital environment for the national digital transformation strategy in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The transition to 4G also allows users to access high-speed internet and conveniently use useful online services in education, healthcare, payments, entertainment, and more.

To date, major network operators have switched off 2G and 3G networks in areas with low demand, while simultaneously preparing the necessary conditions for this transition.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Tinh - Deputy General Director of Viettel TelecomHe believes that shutting down 2G is a very correct policy, in line with current trends and customer and societal needs. "This is a crucial turning point in the development of telecommunications infrastructure in Vietnam, as well as a key to unlocking a digital life and a digital future with many new conveniences and opportunities for the people," Mr. Tinh emphasized.
