(Baonghean.vn)- In Anh Son, the model of growing lemons year-round by Mr. Ho Xuan Trung (village 10, Tuong Son commune) is becoming widely known.

While watching a television program, Mr. Trung was very impressed with the four-season lemon variety that bears fruit all year round. Therefore, the idea of developing a four-season lemon cultivation model began to take shape in his mind. In May 2014, he and his wife boldly borrowed 80 million VND from the bank and traveled all the way to Tuyen Quang province to buy seedlings.

Mr. Ho Xuan Trung's four-season lemon orchard generates nearly 100 million VND in income per year.

In the early days of bringing the four-season lemon trees to plant, he couldn't help but worry, because he was the first person in Anh Son district to experiment with growing them. Therefore, in addition to investing in care, he also closely monitored the growth process. After only one year, the four-season lemon trees were ready for harvest. Mr. Trung said: "This is an easy-to-grow and easy-to-care-for variety, and especially adapts to all climatic conditions. With good care, it can be harvested for 10 to 15 years."

Mr. Trung's family's 100-tree lemon orchard yields fruit year-round, with outstanding productivity and large, juicy fruit. He harvests the lemons every 20 days. In 2015 alone, the orchard produced over 2 tons of fruit. At an average price of 20,000 VND/kg, and reaching 35,000 VND/kg during the Lunar New Year, this brought in over 50 million VND – a much higher return than some other crops grown on the same soil.

Besides supplying fresh lemons, he also produces and grafts lemon saplings to several farmers in neighboring districts and in Ha Tinh and Quang Binh provinces. In 2015, he sold over 300 grafted saplings. Each sapling cost 150,000 VND, bringing his family an income of 45 million VND.

Growing lemons year-round is a new direction that brings high efficiency to hardworking and inquisitive farmers like Mr. Ho Xuan Trung.

Planting and care techniques
* Planting season
Lemons can be grown year-round, especially during the winter-spring season (February-March) and the autumn-winter season (August-October).
* Planting method and density
- Trees are spaced 3m apart, and rows are spaced 4m apart.
- Planting hole dimensions: 0.6 x 0.6 x 0.6 m.
* Planting method: Dig a small hole in the mound, place the seedling in the hole, remove the plastic bag from the root ball, fill in the soil to secure the root ball, and insert a stake to keep the plant stable.
* Fertilizers
- Base fertilization: Before planting, apply about 20 kg of well-rotted manure or organic fertilizer per planting hole. Apply the fertilizer to the bottom of the hole, cover with a little soil, and then place the seedling in. After planting, water to maintain moderate moisture. You can water every 2-3 days during the first few weeks after planting. After that, water once every 1-10 days. Always keep the area free of weeds.

- Fertilization: In the first year, fertilize with 1 tablespoon of urea fertilizer mixed with 10 liters of water to water the plants. Water 3-4 times a year. When watering with diluted organic fertilizer, use a ratio of approximately 1:5. From the second year onwards, fertilize with 10-50g of urea fertilizer per plant per year. Divide into 3-4 applications, applying to the base of the plant and covering with soil, or dissolving in water for watering. If watering, rinse thoroughly with clean water afterwards.
