Mao Xinyu, grandson of the late Chinese chairman Mao Zedong, was not invited to the Chinese Communist Party congress in October.

Major General Mao Xinyu is one of five high-ranking military officials who were not invited to the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, held on October 18, the South China Morning Post reported today. All five have family backgrounds or connections to former national leaders or generals in China.
Mao Xinyu is the grandson of the late Chinese chairman Mao Zedong. He was promoted to Major General in 2010.
The four remaining military officials who were not invited were General Liu Yuan, son of the late Chairman Liu Shaoqi; Admiral Liu Xiaojiang, son-in-law of the late General Secretary Hu Yaobang; General Zhang Haiyang, son of the late Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) Zhang Zhen; and General Liu Yazhou, son-in-law of former Chairman Li Xiannian.
This year's Chinese Communist Party Congress is attended by 2,300 delegates from all sectors. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) has 300 delegates attending, the list of delegates was released on September 6th.
The Chinese Communist Party Congress is an event held every five years. The Congress is considered the basis for determining China's next leadership team. Chinese President Xi Jinping is predicted to be re-elected as General Secretary for the 2017-2022 term.
The congress will also elect seven members of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China. These members all hold important positions and wield supreme power within China's leadership. Currently, only President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang are eligible to remain in office for another term; the other five will retire due to age and term limits.
