Demirbay made a mistake when criticizing female referee Bibiana Steinhaus on November 29: "Women are not suitable to work in men's football". This comment was made after Demirbay was given two yellow cards by Steinhaus in the match between Fortuna Dusseldorf and Frankfurt.
Dissatisfied with Demirbay's actions, Dusseldorf punished the player by making him referee a women's youth football match. On December 7, Dusseldorf posted a photo of Demirbay refereeing on Facebook with the comment: "This is what happens when a young player makes a mistake."

Demirbay also apologized to Steinhaus. "I shouldn't have said that. That's not how I feel about women," he said.
Demirbay, 22, currently plays for Dusseldorf on loan from Bundesliga side Hamburg. The midfielder was born in Germany to a family of Turkish descent. Demirbay has represented Turkey at U19, U20 and U21 level.
