Chelsea are being urged to sign Darwin Nunez: Could he be the new Dennis Bergkamp?
Legendary striker Marcel Desailly believes that Darwin Nunez will undergo a significant transformation at Chelsea if placed in the right tactical system under manager Liam Rosenior.
In an effort to regain their position in the Premier League, Chelsea have just received strategic advice from legend Marcel Desailly. The 1998 World Cup winner believes his former club should sign Darwin Nunez, the Uruguayan striker who is looking to return to Europe after a spell in Saudi Arabia.
The transformation of a 'stifled genius'
Marcel Desailly believes Darwin Nunez is in a similar situation to Dennis Bergkamp at Inter Milan or Roberto Carlos in the early days of their careers. These are cases of talent being stifled because they haven't found the right environment to fully develop their special qualities.

"I would strongly recommend Chelsea buy Nunez. He's a good, intelligent player and just needs the right environment to shine," Desailly shared. According to him, the 26-year-old striker needs to be surrounded by creative and confident midfielders – those who are ready to deliver passes as soon as he starts making runs down the flanks of the opposition's defense.
The journey from Anfield to the Saudi Pro League
Nunez's journey in England has been a story full of ups and downs. After a blockbuster £64 million transfer from Benfica, Nunez made 143 appearances for Liverpool and scored 40 goals. Notably, he was a key player in helping "The Kop" win the Premier League title in the 2024-25 season before moving to Al-Hilal.

In the Middle East, Nunez maintained a fairly consistent performance with 9 goals in 24 matches. However, the arrival of Karim Benzema at Al-Hilal significantly limited his playing opportunities. His recent exclusion from the Saudi Pro League squad further fueled his desire to return to the top tier of European football.
Strategic choices for manager Liam Rosenior
The signing of Nunez could be a crucial move for manager Liam Rosenior, especially with star player Cole Palmer's future uncertain due to interest from Manchester United. Desailly suggests that if Palmer decides to leave, Chelsea should use the huge transfer fee to reinvest in players who fit the team's new philosophy.
Currently, Chelsea are ranked 6th in the Premier League, 3 points behind Manchester United. Having already reached the Champions League round of 16 and preparing to face Wrexham in the FA Cup, "The Blues" need more firepower to compete for the title. The arrival of an experienced Premier League striker like Nunez is expected to bring a breakthrough to the London team's attack, which has been lacking consistency.
