Doctor Nguyen Trung Cap, Emergency Department, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said that the patient was admitted to the hospital in critical condition due to septic shock. The patient received intensive care, antibiotics, vasopressors, mechanical ventilation, and continuous blood filtration, but the shock did not improve, the necrotic rash continued to spread, and the prognosis was poor. On May 21, the family asked to take the patient home.
According to doctors, the disease transmitted from pigs to humans has 3 forms: sepsis, purulent meningitis or a combination of both. Depending on the form, the disease can progress to be mild or severe, with some cases being severe from the beginning. The disease can be fatal if treatment is delayed. The mortality rate is about 7%.
The patient died due to bacterial toxins, causing shock. Some patients developed septic shock after only 3 days, while others took 10 days to become seriously ill, depending on their constitution. People who have been infected with Streptococcus suis can still relapse.
Streptococcus bacteria reside in the respiratory tract, digestive tract... of pigs. Therefore, to prevent the disease, people need to raise awareness by not slaughtering sick and dead pigs, not handling raw pork with bare hands, especially when there are wounds on the hands. Wash hands thoroughly after processing. Do not eat sick pigs, raw pork, blood pudding, uncooked pig organs and especially do not eat sick or dead pigs. In any case of contact with sick pigs, care, raising or slaughtering, destroying, there should be protective equipment. The incubation period is short, only from a few hours to 3 days. When the patient has a high fever (40-41 degrees Celsius), there are necrotic hemorrhages under the skin, diarrhea, stiff neck..., and difficulty breathing, they should go to the hospital early to avoid the risk of death. |
