Chevrolet Corvette C8: Tremec releases a compatible 6-speed manual transmission.

CTVXNovember 6, 2025 21:01

Tremec is developing a 6-speed transaxle manual transmission that shares a mounting point with the TR-9080 DCT on the Corvette C8; it produces 1,000 hp, 1,085 Nm, and 8,600 rpm; pricing and release dates are yet to be announced.

Tremec is developing a six-speed transaxle manual transmission that shares the same dimensions and mounting points as the eight-speed TR-9080 DCT dual-clutch transmission in the Chevrolet Corvette C8. According to the announcement, the new transmission is expected to handle an estimated 1,000 hp, 1,085 Nm (800 lb-ft) of torque, and a maximum input shaft speed of 8,600 rpm. Pricing, commercialization timeline, and software solutions for the Corvette to accommodate the three-pedal configuration have not yet been announced.

Manual transmission solution for the Corvette C8 mid-engine.

Starting with the 2020 generation, the Corvette is only available with the TR-9080 DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission. Tremec's new 6-speed manual transmission opens up the possibility of manual shifting for the C8, as it shares mounting points and dimensions with the existing DCT. Mechanically, this is the biggest breakthrough in the transition to three pedals on a mid-engine platform.

However, many integration aspects remain open: software to control the vehicle so it "forgets" the original automatic transmission, the placement of the gear shifter in the cabin, and interventions into related electronic systems. Information regarding costs and timelines has not yet been released.

Load-bearing capacity and mechanical structure

Tremec says the new 6-speed manual transmission can handle an estimated 1,000 hp and 1,085 Nm (800 lb-ft), with an input torque limit of 8,600 rpm. These figures point toward high torque handling, consistent with the performance characteristics of the powerful Corvette configurations. According to Car and Driver, these torque figures “sound like” they were built for the ZR1; it is unclear whether the final figures will be adjusted to encompass the rumored 1,064 hp and 1,123 Nm (828 lb-ft).

The gearbox housing is made of aluminum to optimize weight and heat dissipation. A direct-drive gerotor-type oil pump system from the inlet shaft ensures oil circulation and cooling under heavy load and high RPM conditions—a crucial factor with the transaxle located near the rear axle.

Mechanical differential, gear ratio, and operating effects.

According to sources, the transaxle assembly uses a mechanical limited-slip differential instead of the electronically controlled differential found in the current Corvette. Additionally, the number of gears has been reduced from 8 (DCT) to 6 (manual), which may result in less responsive acceleration/revving at optimal revs in certain situations. In return, the manual shifting experience with a clutch pedal and a 6-speed shifter is something the Corvette C8 lacks.

The challenge of integrating electronics on the C8.

The core issue, beyond the mechanical aspects, lies in the control layer. The C8 currently defaults to an automatic transmission; to operate in manual mode, the vehicle needs to be reprogrammed to avoid searching for signals from the original DCT. There is no information yet on who will develop the software and integration package. Furthermore, the placement of the gear shifter and pedal mechanism also raises questions that need to be addressed in the practical implementation of this swap.

Not just for Corvettes: broad application potential.

According to Car and Driver, because it shares the same TR-9080 DCT transmission, the Ford Mustang GTD is also a potential candidate for the new 6-speed manual transmission. The transaxle nature of the product opens the door for many high-performance mid-engine models, not just the Corvette.

“This opens up the floodgates,” said Dave Smith, president of Factory Five Racing. “We have a new mid-engine model coming out, which is already planned, and this solution is a big boost.”

The official specifications have been released.

Conclusion: More experience options, still awaiting a software solution.

Tremec's 6-speed manual transmission solves the biggest mechanical bottleneck in bringing manuals back to the Corvette C8: compatibility with the TR-9080 DCT. Load-bearing figures suggest significant performance potential, while the aluminum chassis and gerotor pump prioritize operational durability. The road ahead lies in the electronics and cabin packaging. When these pieces fit together, the market could welcome another rare configuration—a manual mid-engine—not exclusive to the Corvette.
