Just because of a look, conflict leads to a heartbreaking murder
Nguyen Duy On thought that the woman who came to visit kept staring at him, so he yelled at her, and then the two had a conflict. When the woman's husband beat him, On had the intention of revenge and used scissors to stab Mr. T in the eye.
On June 11, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened the first instance trial of defendant Nguyen Duy On (born 1999), residing in Hau Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district (Nghe An) for the crime of murder.

Around mid-February 2024, Nguyen Duy On was at home when Ms. Nguyen Thi D. (a relative) came to visit and the two sides had a conflict and argued.
A moment later, On went down to the kitchen to get a knife to cut the meat, but Ms. D. thought that On was using the knife to slash her, so she called her husband, Mr. Nguyen Van T. (born in 1985). After his wife's call for help, Mr. T. went over and punched On in the face and chest.
3 months later, On thought about being beaten by Mr. T. and was upset, and had the idea of revenge. During 2 days from May 23 to 24, 2024, On took scissors and went to Mr. T.'s house with the intention of stabbing him in revenge. However, because he saw someone coming to visit Mr. T.'s house, he returned.
At about 8:00 p.m. on May 25, 2024, after finishing dinner, On continued to carry sharp scissors and cycle to Mr. T's house. Seeing Mr. T. lying on a folding chair and using his phone under the Barringtonia acutangula tree in front of the house, On walked over, picked up the scissors and stabbed Mr. T. in the right eye. Then, On pulled out the scissors, cursed, and threatened to kill him.
As for the victim, although he was taken to many hospitals for emergency treatment, due to severe injuries, on July 20, 2024, Mr. T. died of respiratory failure, circulatory failure due to a penetrating eyeball wound, skull fracture causing cerebral edema and cerebral hemorrhage.
Afterwards, the authorities conducted a psychiatric examination of Nguyen Duy On and concluded: Before, during and after committing the crime, On suffered from mental and behavioral disorders due to the use of hallucinogenic substances, a form of psychosis.
At the trial, the defendant stated that he was upset that Ms. D. came to his house to visit but kept staring at him, and was then beaten by her husband, so he decided to take revenge.
The defendant's relatives presented the fact that On was mentally ill to ask the court to consider reducing the sentence.
Attending the trial, the victim's family requested the defendant to compensate 3.5 billion VND for expenses such as hospital treatment, funeral expenses, mental damage and child support.
The panel of judges determined that the defendant’s actions were dangerous to society and violated the right to life of a human being, so it should be dealt with severely. However, mitigating circumstances should also be considered, such as his honest confession, remorse, and his family’s compensation of 20 million VND.
Considering the case as a whole, the court sentenced Nguyen Duy On to 17 years in prison for murder. In the civil case, the court ordered the defendant to compensate the victim's representative more than 1.3 billion VND.
