Navy Television has just released a video of the Vietnam Navy's 2016 exercise, including a rare torpedo launch by a Turya-class ship.
According to data released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the Vietnam People's Navy received a total of five Turya-class hydrofoil torpedo boats from the Soviet Union during the period 1984 - 1986, and all are still in operation today. |
Project 206M Turya is an upgrade of Project 206 Shershen torpedo boats, similar to their predecessors, they are mainly used for escort and coastal warfare missions. Basic specifications of the Turya-class torpedo boat: full load displacement 250 tons; length 39.6m; width 7.6m; draft 4m. The ship is equipped with 3 M-503B2 diesel engines with a capacity of 15,000 horsepower, for a maximum speed of 40 knots. |
Turya's armament includes four 53-56mm anti-surface ship torpedo tubes, a 110-PM twin-barreled 25mm gun positioned forward and a 57mm AK-257 automatic gun positioned aft. |
With the above weapon configuration, although considered quite strong, the Turya torpedo boats will find it difficult to play a role in modern warfare. Therefore, upgrading the power of this class of warship is very necessary. |
According to Russian media, there are currently two Russian upgrade packages that are considered very suitable for Vietnam's Turya warship. The Project 206MR Vikhr fast attack missile boat (NATO name Matka) is considered the last descendant of the Project 205 Osa fast attack missile boat class and is a modified version of the Project 206M Turya torpedo boat. |
The most significant change of Project 206MR is that the ship is equipped with Garpun Bal radar on top of the radar tower to guide the P-15 Termit anti-ship missiles (2 launch tubes similar to the type installed on the Project 61 MR Kashin destroyer) and MR-123 Vympel radar to control artillery fire. |
The remaining differences are that the front 110-PM gun has been replaced by a 76mm AK-176M automatic gun and the 30mm AK-630M high-speed anti-aircraft gun has taken the place of the AK-257 gun at the rear. |
It can be seen that although the power has increased significantly, Project 206MR still does not fully meet the requirements of modern naval operations and needs to be upgraded. Project 206.6 is considered the final development step of the Matka-class fast attack missile boat, currently the Russian Navy has only one ship serving in the Black Sea Fleet. |
Compared to Project 206MR, Project 206.6 replaced 2 outdated P-15 Termit anti-ship missiles with 2 KT-184 4-tube launcher clusters with 8 advanced 3M24 Uran missiles. In addition, the ship was also equipped with a double-barreled AK-630М1-2 anti-aircraft gun instead of the old single-barreled AK-630M gun. |
With the above changes, it can be said that the Project 206.6 fast attack missile boat has partly met the requirements of modern naval operations. This is an option worth considering for the Vietnamese Navy, especially when the number of our missile boats is still modest. |
