Apple's MacBook Neo strategy is making Windows laptop manufacturers uneasy.
With a starting price of just 16.49 million VND, the MacBook Neo puts significant pressure on the mainstream laptop segment amidst soaring PC component prices driven by the AI craze.
Apple's launch of the new MacBook Neo line at a competitive price has created a seismic shift in the Windows laptop market. Traditional PC manufacturers, which rarely faced direct competition from Apple in the budget segment, are now having to completely reassess their business strategies.
A shock from the mainstream laptop segment.
According to SY Hsu, co-CEO of ASUS, the starting price of just 16.49 million VND for the MacBook Neo has created a major "shock" to the entire PC industry. Previously, MacBook products were typically positioned in the high-end segment with prices that were difficult to access. The appearance of a budget laptop from Apple has prompted major players like Microsoft, Intel, and AMD to closely monitor the situation.

Notably, discussions about how to compete with the MacBook Neo had been circulating within manufacturers for a year prior. However, when the product officially launched, the price pressure far exceeded many experts' predictions. This forced the Windows ecosystem to prepare new product lines to retain mainstream users.
A18 Pro chip performance and hardware limitations
At the heart of the MacBook Neo is the A18 Pro chip, delivering impressive performance for everyday tasks and even light entertainment. According to PCMag's review, the device received an "excellent" rating for its responsive processing speed. However, Mr. Hsu also pointed out potential drawbacks that might make users hesitate, particularly the non-upgradable 8GB RAM.

Furthermore, ASUS executives describe the MacBook Neo as more of a "content consumption" device than a work-intensive computer. They compare this experience to the iPad, which differs from traditional Windows laptops that typically focus on multitasking and high computing power. Nevertheless, for students and basic users, it remains an extremely attractive option.

Pressure from global supply chains
The PC market is facing a major challenge as memory prices have increased by more than 100% compared to the previous quarter due to the impact of the artificial intelligence (AI) craze. While companies like ASUS and HP are at risk of having to raise product prices due to escalating component costs, Apple seems to be leveraging its supply chain advantages to maintain low prices for the MacBook Neo.
Below are the detailed specifications and pricing for the upcoming MacBook Neo models in Vietnam:
| Version | Detailed configuration | Reference price (VNĐ) |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Neo 256GB | 6CPU - 5GPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD | 16,490,000 |
| MacBook Neo 512GB | 6CPU - 5GPU, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Touch ID | 18,990,000 |
The component shortage is projected to last until 2027. This means that Windows laptop manufacturers will face significant difficulties in launching products at the same price point to directly compete with Apple for at least the next two years.
