(Baonghean.vn) - This afternoon, September 12th, in light of the rapid and complex developments of the tropical depression which has the potential to strengthen into a storm, the Central Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue held an online conference to urgently discuss proactive measures to cope with the natural disaster.

The conference was attended by the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of 13 coastal provinces and cities from Nghe An to Binh Thuan. Comrade Nguyen Xuan Cuong, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and head of the Central Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, chaired the meeting.

At the Nghe An location, Mr. Dinh Viet Hong, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee and Head of the Provincial Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue, presided over the meeting.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, at 2 PM on September 12th, the tropical depression was located approximately 210 km east of the coast of Quang Nam and Binh Dinh provinces. It is forecast to move west-northwest and potentially strengthen into a typhoon. By 7 PM on September 12th, the typhoon's center will be located at approximately 14.7 degrees North latitude and 110.4 degrees East longitude, about 150 km east of the coast of Quang Nam and Binh Dinh provinces. The strongest winds at the center of the typhoon will be at level 8 (65-70 km/h), with gusts of level 9-10, and the natural disaster risk level will be level 3.

During the online working session, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong requested that localities prioritize the safety of people's lives in storm prevention and control; urged all boats and ships to seek safe shelter; reviewed specific flood and storm prevention and control plans; accelerated the harvesting of summer-autumn rice crops; and prepared rescue and relief plans when necessary.

According to forecasts, Nghe An is one of the localities that will be severely affected by this storm, with risks of thunderstorms, strong winds inland, and flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas. By tomorrow afternoon, September 13th, the storm and heavy rain will spread to Nghe An. Currently, there are 156 vessels with 686 workers operating in the coastal waters of Nghe An province, and 182 vessels with 1,656 workers operating in the common fishing grounds; all vessels have received the storm warning and direction and are on their way to seek shelter.

In response to the approaching storm, the Provincial Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue issued a directive requesting localities to strictly implement several measures, including: Regularly updating information on tropical depressions and storms; focusing on informing owners of vessels operating at sea about the location and development of tropical depressions and storms so that they can proactively take preventive measures, avoid, or evacuate from dangerous areas within the next 24 hours.

Provide timely information to the public, especially in remote areas, to proactively prevent and assess areas at high risk of flash floods and landslides to ensure the safety of people and property; focus on directing the harvesting of rice and other crops during the summer-autumn season. Inspect and review the readiness to implement operational plans for drainage sluices and pumping stations, ensuring the safety of dikes and reservoirs, especially small reservoirs, in case of heavy and localized rainfall; prepare forces and equipment for timely rescue when needed.
