The official commencement date has been set for the North-South high-speed railway mega-project.
The government has officially requested ministries, departments, and localities to urgently complete land clearance and other necessary conditions to ensure the commencement of the North-South high-speed railway project in December 2026.
The official start date for the North-South high-speed railway mega-project has been set for December 2026.
The Government Office has issued Notice No. 335/TB-VPCP summarizing the conclusions of Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha at the meeting on the compensation, support, and resettlement project for the North-South high-speed railway line.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha acknowledged the efforts of the Ministry of Construction, other ministries and localities in investment preparation, planning review, and preliminary design. He particularly commended the proactive efforts of the five localities of Binh Thuan, Phu Yen, Ha Tinh, Thanh Hoa, Ninh Binh, and the Vietnam Electricity Group.
According to the Ministry of Construction's report, progress is generally still slow and uneven across localities. Many aspects remain unclear in implementation, especially coordination between different levels and sectors, and the resolution of obstacles related to planning, legal matters, finance, and the decentralization of responsibilities among local governments.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that this project is of đặc biệt national importance, a driving force for socio-economic development and ensuring national security and defense. Therefore, he requested that ministries, sectors, and localities clearly define their responsibilities and promote a proactive and creative spirit.
The goal is to ensure that all conditions for project commencement are met by December 2026, as required by the Government in Resolution No. 106/NQ-CP dated April 23, 2025.
Initially, localities are focusing on completing procedures related to land clearance and resettlement. At the same time, they are selecting some key locations such as train stations and convenient sections of the route to hold the groundbreaking ceremony on August 19, 2025.
Resettlement areas to facilitate land clearance for the project will also be launched at the same time.

Project information
The North-South high-speed railway project received approval from the National Assembly in November 2024 for investment. The line is 1,541km long, starting at Ngoc Hoi station (Hanoi) and ending at Thu Thiem station (Ho Chi Minh City), passing through 20 provinces and cities with a total investment of approximately 67 billion USD.
This is considered a vital national transportation artery, connecting the North and South of Vietnam and playing a crucial role in promoting Vietnam's socio-economic development.
Several corporations and private businesses have already expressed interest and willingness to participate in the project, most notably VinSpeed High-Speed Railway Investment and Development Joint Stock Company and Truong Hai Group (THACO).
The official commencement date marks a significant step in the realization of the largest transportation mega-project in Vietnam's history.
