Is it illegal to carry a passenger in the trunk of a car?
The trunk of a passenger car is for storing goods and belongings, and the bed of a pickup truck is not for carrying people.
Therefore, any instance of carrying passengers in the trunk of a car is a violation of traffic laws and is subject to penalties.
According to the law, road users must comply with safety rules. Accordingly, people in cars must sit in their assigned seats. If a seat has a seatbelt, it must be fastened.
With passenger cars, the trunk is for storing goods and items. The bed of a pickup truck is for carrying cargo, not for transporting people.

According to point c, clause 2, Article 24 of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP dated December 30, 2019, the act of transporting passengers in the cargo bed of a vehicle in violation of regulations is subject to the following penalties:
A fine of 800,000 to 1,000,000 VND will be imposed on drivers of trucks, tractors, and similar vehicles who illegally transport passengers in the cargo bed; or who allow people to lie or sit on the roof or cling to the outside of the vehicle while it is in motion.
In addition to fines, drivers who commit violations may also face supplementary penalties such as suspension of their driver's license for 1 to 3 months.
Furthermore, authorities also advise drivers not to carry passengers in the truck bed or trunk of pickup trucks, especially when traveling on highways. In situations involving sudden braking, sharp turns, or potholes, passengers in the truck bed or trunk could be in life-threatening danger.
