According to local people, crab hunting boats in Nghi Tan ward are mainly owned by people from Quynh Phuong ward (Hoang Mai town), a few are owned by people from Cua Lo and Thanh Hoa. Crab-hunting nets are usually woven from 70 to 80 nets together to form a net 8 to 10 km long and about 3 m wide. Depending on the hunting location, offshore or inshore, the net is dropped close to the bottom at a depth of 14 to 30 m. After dropping the net for 7 to 10 hours, the boats begin to collect the nets and leave. Crabs caught in the nets are left in plastic containers and removed when they arrive at the dock. Mr. Phan Van Anh (45 years old), residing in Quynh Phuong ward, Hoang Mai town, said that his family has been crab hunting for many years, but this year they have just come to Cua Lo to work. According to Mr. Anh, crab hunting boats from Quynh Phuong coming here are all given free accommodation at the house of the "boss" who buys crabs at the wharf. The amount of crabs his family caught this year seems to be less than last year. Photo: Huy Thu

Previously, he used to hunt crabs in Hoang Mai and Sot seas (Ha Tinh). For the past 5 years, he and his wife have been working in Cua Lo. "The boat costs about 300,000 VND for fuel each night, in addition to the dock fee. Sea crab hunting is sometimes successful, sometimes not, usually only a few dozen kilos per night. In a year when crabs are successful, there are nights when you can catch a hundred kilograms of crabs, earning 15 - 20 million VND". Photo: Huy Thu
