Recently, the sim fruit has been a best-selling item on the market, and the area dedicated to cultivating and growing sim in various localities has been maintained and expanded. Currently, sim hills in the districts of Thanh Chuong, Do Luong, Anh Son, Nam Dan, Hung Nguyen, Yen Thanh, etc., are in full bloom with ripe fruit. These days, people in the communes of Thanh Chuong district, such as Thanh Xuan, Thanh Lam, Thanh Ha, and Thanh Duc, which have many sim fruit trees, are entering the sim fruit harvesting season. Every day from 5-6 am, people gather to go up the mountains to pick sim fruit. Households with large sim tree plantations that cannot harvest all the fruit themselves have to hire local laborers to help with the picking. Photo: Huy Thu

People in Thanh Chuong who go to pick wild berries usually bring bags, sacks, water, etc. While picking, they often hang a bag in front of their stomach or on their side, putting the berries into it as they pick them. When the bag is full, they empty the berries into a sack. Photo: Huy Thu

People who go to pick wild berries usually don't wear gloves because it makes it difficult to handle them; the berries are small and easily fall off, so picking them with bare hands is faster. Pickers are required to only pick ripe berries, keep the tree clean after picking, and tidy up each picking area. When going up the mountain, people pick berries in rows or spread out, each person picking in a different area. Photo: Huy Thư

A woman from Thanh Xuan commune, picking wild berries in the forest, said: "This year the berries are quite abundant, but the price isn't as good as in previous years. To pick a lot of berries, pickers need to be quick-handed, sharp-eyed, and diligent in gathering them." (Photo: Huy Thu)

Those who work as hired berry pickers are usually paid by the berry hill owners based on the amount of berries they pick. Currently, people are paid 10,000 VND for each kilogram of berries they pick. During the berry season, a person working diligently on the mountain can pick around 15 kg of berries per session. As the season draws to a close, the berries become scarcer, and the amount of berries picked decreases. Photo: Huy Thu

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao, residing in Kim Son hamlet, Thanh Xuan commune, stated that her family owns approximately 2 hectares of myrtle bushes. During the myrtle ripening season, she and her husband regularly go into the mountains to pick the fruit. On days when there is a large quantity of ripe myrtle, she has to hire additional people from the area to help with the picking. Depending on the family, some pick once a day, while others pick every two days. On average, her family earns around 20 million VND per year from selling myrtle fruit. (Photo: Huy Thu)

Myrtle bushes on barren, dry hills will produce small fruits. Conversely, myrtle bushes on carefully cultivated hills will yield large, ripe fruits. Myrtle berries taste sweeter in sunny weather. Ripe myrtle berries fall easily; a gentle breeze, a light rain, or even someone touching the tree while picking can cause the ripe fruit to fall to the ground. Photo: Huy Thư

During this time, many students also go to the forest to pick wild berries to earn extra income. Nguyen Van Thiet (17 years old) from Thanh Xuan commune shared: "In the past few days, my mother and I have been picking wild berries for households in the village. On sunny days, we have to go early to get back early. On average, my mother and I pick about 25-27 kg each time we go to the forest." Photo: Huy Thu

Around 10-11 am, when the heat becomes intense, the people picking wild berries stop their work and carry their sacks of berries down the mountain. Wild berries are being bought by local businesses at 20,000 VND/kg; they buy everything that is harvested. The wild berry season is bringing income to both the owners of the berry hills and the hired pickers. Each trip to the mountain to pick berries can earn a person between 80,000 and 150,000 VND.
