(Baonghean.vn) - In the face of unavoidable storms and floods, the fishermen in the border village of Phuc Son commune (Anh Son district) are almost accustomed to confronting the dangerous rising waters.

The fishing village of Cao Vều (Phúc Sơn commune, Anh Sơn district) is adrift in floodwaters.

We visited the fishing village in Cao Veu hamlet, Phuc Son commune. A small village nestled beside the Giang River. After typhoon number 2, and the effects of typhoons number 3 and 4, heavy rains and floods have turned the once peaceful river into a turbulent, muddy mess. Mr. Duong Van Phuong, the oldest resident who has spent 30 years navigating the waterways, said: "Life on the river is familiar with the flood seasons. These past few days, with heavy rains and rising water levels, the men in the village have been taking turns day and night watching the water. To prevent the rafts from being swept away by the floodwaters, the fishermen have driven bamboo stakes deep into the riverbank, quite high above the water level, and tied them securely with ropes to anchor their boats."

The entire fishing village has only 7 households, each with 2-3 people, mostly residents of Thanh Nho commune, Thanh Chuong district, who came all the way to the Giang River area of Veu village, Phuc Son commune (Anh Son district) to make a living. A man named Van said: "Many years ago, when the rafts were still made of crude bamboo, the worst thing was the flood season. The waves would destroy the rafts, causing significant losses for the fishermen. But in recent years, the villagers have learned to use large barrels tied together, so even with big waves and strong currents, it's difficult to damage the rafts. However, during the flood season, the livelihoods of the fishermen become more difficult than ever."

Looking out the window at the murky, fast-flowing river, Ms. Nguyen Thi Oanh sighed: "When the flood season comes, the shrimp and fish are carried downstream by the current, making fishing increasingly difficult. These days, the river water rises high, and the people in the fishing village have to put down their oars and sigh as they watch the fierce waves. With high water and big waves, they can't go out to fish, and with no other source of income, people have to rely on their meager savings to survive, waiting for the flood to pass."
