Chrome browsers have been found to have 4GB of Gemini Nano data secretly installed to handle local AI processing. Google claims this feature enhances security and privacy for users.
Security expert Alexander Hanff, known as "That Privacy Guy," has just published a significant discovery regarding how the Google Chrome browser manages AI data. According to him, Chrome automatically stores an artificial intelligence (AI) model, up to 4 GB in size, on users' devices without any notification.

This model will be automatically downloaded and installed on all devices that meet the minimum hardware requirements. Notably, the presence of this folder is difficult for average users to notice due to its hidden storage nature. Even when users try to manually delete it, Chrome will automatically restart the data download process on the next startup. This issue has been reported to occur consistently on both Windows and MacBook operating systems.

Amid concerns about storage space usage, Google quickly confirmed the rollout of Gemini Nano on Chrome starting in 2024. A company representative stated that this model serves as a foundation for essential security features, such as fraud detection, and provides application programming interfaces (APIs) for developers.

Instead of sending sensitive user information to cloud servers for analysis, AI can process it locally, minimizing the risk of data leaks. Google claims the system has an automatic regulation mechanism: if a user's computer experiences a severe shortage of storage resources, the browser will automatically uninstall the AI model to free up hard drive space.
