Thailand aims for 241 gold medals at the 33rd SEA Games (its 7th time hosting the event), thereby targeting its 14th overall first place after missing out for four consecutive editions. The country currently holds the record for the most gold medals in the region with over 2,453.

Multi-tiered target: 241, 252, or 288 gold medals?

According to the Sports Commission of Thailand, 241 gold medals is the target number to reclaim the top spot. However, internal figures are still being discussed and adjusted according to the progress of team preparation.

Mr. Preecha Lalloon, Deputy Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, stated: “Regarding the target for the 33rd SEA Games, based on the plans submitted by other sports federations to the high-performance sports development department, they collectively set a target of 288 gold medals.” He added: “However, after discussions at the meeting of the Thai Olympic Committee, everyone agreed that the target should be set at around 252 gold medals. But looking at the final stages of preparation for the Thai sports team, we still want to aim for 288 gold medals, and there may be factors that could push the target higher than 241-252 gold medals.”

Compared to the 95 gold medals won when leading the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore, the jump to 241–252–288 shows an ambitious approach, making the most of home advantage and strong sports.

Key sports in the competition: sepak takraw, athletics, men's football.

The Thai delegation chose "traditional" sports as a springboard for their targets, while simultaneously promoting Olympic sports. The overall goal picture is clearly outlined in clusters:

• Sepak Takraw: Target of 11 gold medals.
• Athletics: Target of 17 gold medals.
• Men's football: determined to win the championship after 8 years.
• Women's volleyball: among the teams with high expectations.
• Olympic sports: taekwondo, weightlifting, badminton.

At the 33rd SEA Games, men's football was seen as a symbol of the effort to "reclaim the championship." Under the leadership of coach Tawatchai Damrong-Ongtrakul, Thailand aimed to win the gold medal after four consecutive missed opportunities. The squad included many notable players such as Chonnaphat Buaphan (BG Pathum United), Khokkhana Kamyok (Muangthong United), Thanakrit Chotmuangpak (Buriram United), Seksan Rattree (Rayong FC), and Yoskorn Burapa (Hougang United – Singapore).

Coach Tawatchai shared: “This squad is 100% ready. We are focusing heavily on physical fitness. The players have gone through many training camps, so tactical issues are no longer an obstacle. Our goal is to win the SEA Games gold medal.”

In terms of gameplay, tempo and stamina – as the coach himself emphasized – will be fundamental to controlling the high frequency of matches. The players from BG Pathum United, Muangthong United, Buriram United, and Rayong FC bring familiarity with the structure and intensity, a crucial factor in a short-term league environment.

The 2015 SEA Games was the last time Thailand topped the medal table with 95 gold medals, 83 silver medals, and 69 bronze medals. Since then, they have not held the number one position. At the 32nd SEA Games in 2023 in Cambodia, Vietnam led with 136 gold medals, 105 silver medals, and 114 bronze medals.

From their past achievements to the depth of their current squad, Thailand is setting a "rigorous benchmark" for themselves: a minimum of 241 gold medals to reopen the door to the top spot, with the hope of potentially approaching 252 and even 288 if everything works out as planned.
