In a recent interview, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel outlined three scenarios that the United States could pursue in its maximum pressure campaign against the island nation.
According to AFP, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel made the statement in an interview with the Spanish news website elDiario.es, published on June 8. The warning from the Cuban head of state comes as Havana faces an economic crisis due to escalating sanctions, embargoes, and pressure campaigns from the administration of US President Donald Trump, including the tightening of fuel supplies.
President Diaz-Canel emphasized that Washington is "betting on three scenarios" regarding Cuba. The first scenario is to use the leverage of "strangling the economy" to incite social unrest. According to the Cuban leader, from that instability, the US will use the pretext of "humanitarian aid" to interfere in Cuba's internal affairs.
The second scenario involves continuing "coercive dialogue" measures with maximum pressure to seize control of the Cuban economy. The ultimate goal of this scenario is to create an opportunity to promote political system change in Havana.
The third scenario is to take military action. The Cuban leader noted that this scenario had been mentioned by US President Donald Trump and "frequently appears in statements by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio."
Recently, Washington has continued to take actions that escalate tensions. In recent weeks, the US has pressured many foreign businesses to cease operations in Cuba by threatening to impose sanctions on any entity that deals with Cuban state-owned enterprises.
In addition, the new sanctions also directly target President Diaz-Canel and his family, as well as members of the Castro ruling family.
Faced with pressure and the threat of potential military action, President Diaz-Canel reaffirmed Havana's unwavering stance. He emphasized that Cuba has the legitimate right and is always prepared to defend itself, ensuring the country will "not be caught by surprise" and "will never surrender."
