Chairman of the Railway Corporation resigns

Mr. Tran Ngoc Thanh resigned and retired 4 years earlier than the current regime.

According to a source from Vietnam Railway Corporation, Mr. Tran Ngoc Thanh has just submitted a letter to the governing ministry and the Board of Members of the Corporation requesting to resign as Chairman and retire.

Previously, since mid-October, the Ministry of Transport had a plan to transfer and assign Mr. Thanh to the position of Director - Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of the Ministry. The person expected to transfer to Mr. Thanh's position at the Railway Corporation is Mr. Vu Anh Minh - Director of the Department of Enterprise Management under the Ministry of Transport.

Speaking to VnExpress, Mr. Tran Ngoc Thanh said that his resignation at this time was to transfer the leadership position to someone more suitable. The Ministry of Transport has also planned to arrange a new replacement and he supports the organization's decision.

"I have made efforts to reform the railway industry in the past. However, the new phase needs someone else to help the industry change for the better. I would like to step back," said Mr. Thanh. He refused to talk about his appointment to the position of Director - Deputy Head of the Department of Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of the Ministry of Transport.

Mr. Tran Ngoc Thanh, born in 1960, was mobilized and appointed by the Ministry of Transport as Chairman of the Board of Members of the Railway Corporation since April 2013. Previously, Mr. Thanh was the Director of the Department of Transport, Ministry of Transport.

During more than 3 years working at the Railway Corporation, Mr. Thanh was assessed to have contributed to the innovation of production and business activities by implementing the electronic train ticketing system, improving the service quality of some trains, restructuring transportation activities...

However, the railway sector also has many controversial projects such as buying old trains from China; contributing capital to non-industry businesses by leasing land and assets attached to land at 80 Ly Thuong Kiet and 22 Phan Boi Chau. These contents have been assessed as violations by the Ministry in charge and the Government Inspectorate and requested to review the business leaders.
