Davis Cup Final 2015: Murray shines, Britain ends 79-year thirst
After 79 years of waiting, British tennis fans finally got their wish of seeing their team crowned Davis Cup champions. With the Murray brothers in excellent form, England defeated Belgium 3-1 in Ghent, to take the crown in a worthy manner.
Before the final, in addition to the pressure of history, many people were concerned that Leon Smith's students would have to face other challenges such as physical foundation (Andy Murray had just attended the ATP World Tour Finals), different playing fields (playing on clay in Ghent), or difference in level (Edmund was too young). But in the end, they resolved it satisfactorily.
Edmund was certainly a novice. In the opening match, he led David Goffin, 84 places above him, 6-3, 6-1, but then lost very quickly in the next three sets. However, with the brilliance of the Murray brothers, Great Britain could have sealed their fate. Murray beat both Goffin and Bemelmans without dropping a set, but more importantly, in the only doubles match, Andy and Jamie defeated Darcis/Goffin 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. With a 3-1 lead, Great Britain officially won the Davis Cup, and the remaining singles match between Bemelmans and Edmund was abandoned.

Murray finished the 2015 Davis Cup season with an extremely convincing record: 8 wins out of 10, equaling legends such as John McEnroe and Mats Wilander. Including doubles, he won 11 matches this season. In history, only three other players have achieved that. Thanks to Murray, the Great Britain team won their 10th Davis Cup title after a 79-year wait.
England's historic run this season began with a 3-2 win over the United States. They eliminated France 3-1 in the quarter-finals and Australia 3-1 in the semi-finals. And they were crowned champions despite playing away from home.
Thus, in the current Davis Cup gold table, Great Britain has surpassed France to become the third most successful team in history, and is only behind Australia (28) and the US (32).
