The untold story of the relationship between Duc Phuc and his "teacher" My Tam.

November 20, 2017 09:05

With his "hotboy" looks, the singer of "We Still Love Each Other" no longer appears shy or hesitant when interacting with the media as before. Duc Phuc - the winner of The Voice Vietnam 2015 - is open, well-groomed, and confident in conversing with those he meets.

Some people say that after undergoing cosmetic surgery, Duc Phuc's music career skyrocketed. Is this true?

- I'm very happy; with my new image, I've got more shows. However, that doesn't mean I'm invited to sing because of my appearance. Just think, can the audience just stare at me without listening to me sing? I just want to say that everything I do is to serve music; my appearance is just a bridge to bring me closer to the public.

From the story of your cosmetic surgery, the public now sees how lucky you are to have a "mentor" like singer My Tam. My Tam has never abandoned you throughout your journey on "The Voice Vietnam" until now?

- Ms. Tam has given me more than just kindness! I'm lucky to have her help and guidance in the beginning. It's very difficult for young artists to start out, so I didn't feel lost. Both of us are busy with performance schedules and shows, so we have less time to see each other than when I participated in "The Voice Vietnam," but we still keep in touch regularly.

Even when we have shows together, we still try to make the most of our time to chat. We tell each other everything. If there's something I can't remember to say right away, I'll write it down and send it to her as soon as I remember. I always ask for her opinion and advice before making any decisions, even when it comes to cosmetic surgery.

Is it too much to describe your relationship with My Tam as "teacher-student"?

- It's not an exaggeration. Because it's true that Ms. Tam taught me not only music lessons but also how to behave and life lessons. I call Ms. Tam "teacher" and I feel proud of it; I want to call her that with all my love and respect.

I think My Tam and I just don't live in the same house! (Laughs). But My Tam knows about all my stories and decisions; she shares her thoughts and gives me advice.

What unforgettable stories and memories do you and singer My Tam share?

- The most enjoyable and memorable time was when I participated in "The Voice Vietnam." I often went to Ms. Tam's house to practice, and sometimes we would just look at each other and burst out laughing. We cooked together and practiced. The most touching moment was the "The Voice Vietnam" finale; she hugged me and encouraged me a lot. When I had cosmetic surgery, she almost always texted me, asking about my well-being and showing concern. It's hard to find a mentor like that in showbiz.

But many people don't believe that in such a cutthroat, manipulative, and scandalous environment, there's room for genuine feelings? As for Duc Phuc...

- People often overthink things. Close friendships are very normal, even very intimate and lasting. Many people have asked me that question. But everything comes naturally, like me and Ms. Tam; our relationship stems from sincerity. Ms. Tam, with her experience and long-standing presence in the showbiz world, couldn't possibly fail to see if I were only pursuing selfish motives. I'm mature enough to understand that only sincerity can be reciprocated with sincerity. Just do your job well and with integrity!

Young artists often face harsh reactions from the public. Do you think the public is too critical of young artists?

- There are some individuals who negatively influence young artists, and this is indirectly why the public is more critical. I've noticed that. Some people don't contribute or rise to fame through talent; they only chase unnecessary scandals to build their reputation.

But the public is very fair. They cannot deny the contributions and efforts of young artists, if the artists are truly serious about their artistic work and dedication. It's also evident that the public is becoming increasingly demanding, requiring artists to constantly innovate, improve, and invest in their musical products. I always think: "The true test of a horse is on a long journey," and I don't want to be a young, reckless horse.

Every love song that Duc Phuc performs touches the hearts of listeners. So, have you ever been in love?

- I haven't fallen in love yet! I'll fall in love when the time is right. In my music, I try to put myself in the shoes of the audience to understand their emotions and the lyrics. I'm also happy that I'm lucky to have been blessed with such a beautiful voice. (laughs)

Duc Phuc is youthful and fashionable.

I'll be releasing a new song soon, and this one will be a little different from my previous ones. I'll give you a little hint: it's a gentle song about pure, innocent love.

On Vietnamese Teachers' Day, November 20th, do you have any wishes to send to those who have taught you, especially "teacher" My Tam?

- I send my best wishes to all the teachers, wishing them good health and continued passion for their profession, so that students can follow their example. And Ms. Tam is especially wonderful, so I wish her a special farewell. First, I hope she has excellent health, always finds inspiration in music, creates many great and hit songs, and produces many parodies that audiences can create, like the two songs "Where Only You Are" and "Don't Ask Me." My greatest wish is that she finds true love and nurtures that love until marriage.

Thank you for the conversation!
